Somewhere all Aussies should go and check out, especially those with any connection to the Murray. The Murray weaves its way thru three states and ends its journey here at the entrance to the Coorong also. Great fun on the water too for the family. And while you are there, check out the fish cafe!

The Murray Mouth lookout is an easy bike ride out from Goolwa.
Visiting from WA, I rode my mountain bike around Victor Harbor and then to Goolwa and out to the Murray River mouth lookout.
It was a lot of fun getting there - battling every nasty swooping magpie in the State who must have known I was from WA!
To be honest, the view of the Murray Mouth is fairly underwhelming. For such a large river system, it has a pretty insipid exit into the ocean. It was good to see the dredge and to read the information board about its' operations, but otherwise there wasn't much to it.
The mosquitos were in plague proportions though! And the size of them! They made the magpies look small!

A bit of a trip to reach but well worth it. Good view across the water to the Murray mouth and ocean beyond. Vendor caravan at the site selling good fish and chips.

The lookout which you can see The 'mighty' Murray river twist and bend until it reaches the Great Southern ocean.
Australia's longest fresh water river meets the salty sea. If your in this beautiful coastal region of South Australia then it is a interesting sight to see and explore.
There is a weir that stops the salt water from going futher into the Murray fresh water to be viewed. Its a nice place to visit if your keen. Lots of bird life, sea and sand dunes.

The Murray Mouth may seem like an anticlimax for some people but it is a gem. Standing on Hindmarsh Island at the mouth of the mighty Murray River you can see across to Mundoo Island and the Younghusband Peninsula. The opening to the Southern Ocean is plain to see and the surf breaking into the river entrance. Fur seals can often be seen in the waters at the Mouth. This area attracts many different birds and lizards, and plants. As the silt of the river making its way to the sea builds up a dredge is sometimes in operation keeping the natural flow open. A great place to inhale deeply and just let your cares go.

We recently visited Lake Hume where we enjoyed picnic and toilet facilities. Yesterday I visited the magnificent Murray Mouth and marvelled at the end of of this most important river for the three states that use it. Unlike the beginning of the Murray as we know it, there were no picnic or toilet facilities for tourists. The closest toilet was 2.9km away!

We visited on a sunny winter’s day with only a light breeze and we really enjoyed the scenery. We saw the dredgers at the river mouth and a colony of seals across the water on the opposite beach. The beach itself on the Hindmarsh Island side was huge and flat. The kids enjoyed running and drawing in the sand and we enjoyed the peaceful surroundings. It wouldn’t be much fun in windy or wet conditions but pick your day and it’s worth the visit.
