Memorable experience. Earliest trail of the day is the steam engine......usually sells out in advance so recommend pre-purchase. 1 hour ascent at steep grades. Unencumbered views, even on cloudy overcast days. Trains leave ON TIME. still worth the $45 for the biodiesel engines ascending in 45 minutes every half hour

We were lucky enough to go on this most excellent train during peak foliage season in October 2015. The ride last about 55 minutes up, 1 hour on top of the mountain, then 55 minutes down. Conductor was knowledgeable and had a good sense of humor. I would definitely recommend to go on this train at least once in your... More

We arrived and picked up our pre-ordered tickets and boarded our train at 10.15 for a 10.30 start. The journey to the top of Mount Washington (over 6000 feet) takes around 45 minutes with the 'brakeman' providing an interesting commentary on the way up. At some stages the slope is over 37%. We were very lucky as it was a... More

It's a classic. Trip up a (very safe) cog railway. You go only a short distance of 3 or 4 miles but go up in elevation about a mile and the change in plant life is dramatically visible. Interesting, too, because of the frequent bad weather caused by the summit being at the confluence of northern and southern weather currents,... More

I was up here in New Hampshire with a Veterans organization and one of our activities was to ride the Cog. I hadn't been on the Cog in almost 30 years and I had just as much fun on the ride up the mountain this time as I remember having as a small child. Unfortunately , we couldn't make it... More

The cog is a great experience because it gets you to the top of the amazing Mount Washington. Everyone should get there one way or another - I love to hike but I also love to take my non hiking relatives up the cog. And check out the observatory at the top. So cool!

This was a very neat experience for sure. This little engine took us up 6,288 foot to the summit and what a view on a clear day. I have heard it is a terrible view on a cloudy day. The guy that worked the brakes on the cog is quite the jokester, he teased the brakes were out and it... More

What a kick! Going up the steep hill on this railway. Yes, it's expensive but it is sooo worth it. If the day is clear you can see forever, and we were lucky so we saw the Atlantic ocean! The ride up has beautiful views and the top is amazing.

Remembering that this railway, which rises over 6,000 ft. up the mountain was completed in the 1840s, one stands in awe of what it must have taken to accomplish this. With no large trucks equipped with flat beds, nor paved roads to travel, animals were used to cart the wood, steel and any other materials. An engine pushes passenger cars... More

Unfortunately, due to high winds, we could only go halfway up the mountain, which was disappointing. However, Fred have a commentary on the history of the railway and Joey the driver kept things moving. Afterwards, we watched an informative show in the museum. In November, the railway only runs on the weekends, so it's advisable to book online.
