There is a small museum that I recommend visiting before continuing down into the fort site. The remaining buildings are in various states of decay, but you can still get a nice idea of what it was like. The walk around the building sites is easy and flat.

Started out in Dayton, NV , took the Old Como trail with a OverLand Bound 4x4 club I belong to, the back way into Fort Church Hill. You'll need a 4x4, but saw a old mine, old homestead and some beautiful scenery on the way !

First, let me say I am a history buff, so my view is a little clouded. We were enroute from Great Basin NP on Hwy. 50, to South Lake Tahoe and we needed a place to stop for the night with our camper since we couldn't check into our site at Campground by the Lake (see review) until the following... We were unaware of Fort Churchill and saw the sign as we drove by. We decided to stop and eat lunch in the park's picnic grounds. A little dusty, and a little buggy", but OK. The small museum, which can be visited in 30 minutes or so, does a nice job of explaining the fort's role in the mid-19th century.... More

Great place for camping and hiking. The spaces are a nice distance from each other. There are lots coyotes at night, but they stayed out of the campground. Museum was nice but small and cemetery was disappointing . River is empty.

Classic old West -- big sky with old adobe ruins from the fort buildings and the cemetery. It's only about 10 minutes from Rt 50; we spent an hour walking around the ruins and wondering what it was like to be here during the 1850s-1860s and the heyday of the fort, Pony Express, Civil War, etc. Yes, much of the... I love the history of the West here. You can visit these sites and go along a historical trail, including the Pony Express Trail. It is a must see when traveling 95A or 395 toward Reno or Las Vegas!

Interesting area for history and wandering around. Small well maintained museum. Off-season midweek so never saw any Ranger activity. Camped in RV at the campground which has spacious sites and although gravel and dirt, sites were fairly level. Large Back-ins and and Drive through sites available on first come first served basis. Railroad tracks nearby but in three days/two nights... More

the fort Churchill area is a nice complex, made up of the fort, museum, pick nick areas, carson river, and buckland station. lake lahantan is also very close. we made a day trip from carson city to Dayton, to the fort park. think they give tours of buckland station on weekends, but check. there is a gravel road that goes...
