The Missoula art museum is a free art museum in Missoula. It's small, but it has a few different galleries with some exhibits that rotate on a periodic basis. If you are driving through the area, it may be worth a quick stop. We visited the museum to break up a long drive through western Montana.
The galleries in the museum mainly feature modern art. I'm not particularly a fan, but I get how some people might enjoy that type of artwork. There is also an entire exhibit dedicated to environmental preaching that features artwork inspried by a copper mine superfund site. Of course, much of the artwork is actually constructed with copper and the entire building uses electric lighting and copper for all its internal wiring, pipes, and electronics. So, yes, the museum is entirely hypocritical in their criticism of copper mining while using copious amounts of copper.
Parking is available on the street. There are meters, but was inexpensive at I believe $1/hour.
On the whole, I would only recommend the Missoula Art Museum if you are into modern art. Otherwise you can probably skip it.

This museum is well worth a hour or two. The art shown is not hurried and not crammed into every corner. but given space to enjoy. The docent staff is helpful and courteous. And, it is free!

This is another place my husband and I always visit while in Missoula visiting the family. It’s a small three story building near the center of town. Parking on street only but has never been problem.
Free admission but donations appreciated.
Coat room and bathroom on first floor near the front desk and very excellent book selection.
Another restroom downstairs.
We are there twice a year and always see different exhibits.
There are usually 4 -5 different exhibits. Contemporary art , usually at least one room of Native American artists.
Always good signs.
Closed on Mondays.

Nice bite-sized art museum, and it's free, so no cause for complaint! They're known for showcasing contemporary Native artists.

Very nice museum for such a small community. A wide variety of styles represented for our visit. Free. Stairs and an elevator. Nice gift shop. Right downtown.

I had not been impressed so much with a photography exhibit until we viewed A Photographer of Forgotten Men. This Lee Nye collection was amazing. The gentlemen in the photos carried the character of a western bar, Eddy's Club, in the late 1960s and early 1970s. We found more photographs of Lee Nye in the bar, now known as Charlie B's.

Free admission. Very clean and updated. I just wanted to like the art more than I did. Spacious, but you can see it all in less than one hour.

The upper Floor of the museum shows art from native American Indians: really fascinating. Specialy Molly Murphy’s work.

I spent more than an hour marveling at the Hmong cloth exhibit that featured clothing and artifacts from daily life.

We weren't sure what to expect. When we got here, we were told that entry to the museum is free of charge, and it is mostly contemporary, so we thought uh oh. However, there was a fabulous exhibit of textiles of the Hmong people. We were mesmerized by all of it. We ordered a book on it right then and there. The rest of the museum I could take or leave, but if you like contemporary art, you will enjoy it more. Very nice woman who worked the front desk who helped us with questions on the exhibits, Missoula and where to eat.
