Not being to familiar with small town museums I was not really sure what to expect. When we arrived we saw an unassuming building with a train car on the front lawn. We learned that the building is an old school building which was converted into a museum that tells the story of Livingston. There is a collection of railway history, military history, and native American history. In the back of the building are living monuments of yesteryear including the old one room school house, a smith's shop, and ancient machinery including an old fire truck... definitely worth the visit

A fantastic museum off the popular path. Be sure to look this museum up and get a picture of the depot with the mountains in the background. A really good overview of the area is outlined in the 6 room museum. The exhibits are thorough without overloading you with information. Great staff.

New exhibits, kid friendly with the dress up cloths and other items.
Nice display of veterans including a recent WWI exhibit.
Nice outdoor displays too---wagons, fire trucks, agriculture equipment.
Wow with the arrowhead display. A very creative place to visit.
Detailed display of William Clark's party passing through the area in 1806 including a dugout canoe the kids can get it...made by a direct descendant of William Clark!
Worth going many times. They have a large research library if you are looking into history or family links.

Nice museum with a broad collection and friendly staff. They make the museum more of an experience and try everything they can to help you understand the history of Montana.

I can't believe that we visited Livingston several times and somehow missed this little gem. This is probably one of my favorite smaller museums. So much to see inside and out.

Nice historic exhibits, photos of Livingston and regional history. The military exhibit has a lot of interesting stories of people from the area who served from the Civil war to the present. Nice display of old uniforms and artifacts too. They have a very visual fire history display that covers forest fires and town fires throughout the past. We liked the interactive transportation room exhibit too, which had a walk thru Vista dome train car model. Nice to see the maps and stories of all the old Indian, mountain man and Pioneer trails throughout the area. The children enjoyed trying on the period clothing such as the pioneers wore and the mountain man clothing too. The fire display had some firefighting cloths for the kids to try on too. A really nice description and map details of the Lewis & Clark Expedition's route through the area. They even had a real dugout canoe we could sit in built by a great great grandson of Capt. William Clark. Upstairs was an amazing display of all the arrowhead types and styles found in Montana. Next to that was an actual mounted bison! I didn't know they were that big! Outside the museum was a railroad caboose we could walk through. There were a lot of nice old historic vehicles such as fire trucks, wagons, stage coach, and farm equipment. The kids liked the one room school house and the blacksmith shop too. They had some really nice books about local history and other items in their gift shop. The staff was friendly and helpful with our questions about the area too. They also have a nice research library if you wanted to learn more about the history and local pioneers who settled there. A really well interpreted museum! Thanks for preserving history!

Great place to learn about local history from Native Americans of the region, Lewis & Clark Expedition, the railroad, early settlers, wildlife, etc. So much to take in, two days may not be enough to view everything and see all that is available.

It takes about an hour to see this museum. It was not crowded. The day I went to see the museum, it was raining. So, could not do any outdoor activity. So, checked out this museum

We didn't know what to expect of this museum as we'd read about it's low-tech approach and eclectic collection (e.g. an antique soda fountain, a letter to Lewis and Clark regarding Sacajawea's unique geographical knowledge, and current paintings from Montana artists.) I loved this place. Located in a former schoolhouse, The Yellowstone Gateway Museum offers history with a human touch. Included in this disparate collection is a wonderful exhibit about the importance of women in Montana history. A lovingly curated collection.
