We were staying at the Koa in west glacier. Popped into town for provisions and on the way back decided to detour to check out the dam. I have been to many dams before and was expecting an hour journey, but was pleasantly surprised after 7 minutes we rounded the corner and there it was. You can also drive across it and there is parking on both sides of the dam to take photos, park, and turn around. We always like checking out theses man made marvels and for a 15 minute rounder I would recommend to anyone.

Even in heavy snow this was still a spectacular stop. At the stunning height of 564 ft. (172 m) it towers over the South Fork Flathead River. The length of the dam is 2115 ft. (645 m) and provides for great photo ops. The dam was finished in 1953 with cutting edge features at the time. One of the most notable features is the Morning Glory spill way, the highest of its type in the world. While the main uses are hydroelectric power, here but down river as well, flood control is another important function. The reservoir serves as a great recreation area for camping, boating, swimming, fishing and many other activities. Jewel Basin is adjacent and offers some of the most incredible hiking anywhere. This time of year the road past the dam, West Side Drive, (NF 895) is not maintained and may be difficult even with four wheel drive. The closest supplies are in Hungry Horse. Carry it in~ carry it out!!

We visited Hungry Horse Dam on our first day in Glacier. We highly recommend visiting and doing the free tour at the visitor center. Our tour guides were Anne and Haley they were phenomenal. Extremely helpful and knowledgeable on more than just the dam. They told us where to find a nesting pair of Osprey, and where to go to find Golden Eagles. This detour is worth every dam minute.

We were in Hungry Horse for a couple of days to visit Glacier National Park. On our first day in town, we drove to the reservoir to have a look around. The Visitor Center was closed when we were there due to Covid-19 restrictions. But we were able to view some displays near the dam regarding its history. The reservoir has a "glory hole" spillway, but it wasn't in operation on the day of our visit.
There is a road along the southwest side of the lake. We drove on it for a while. It is narrow and winding, with a substantial drop-off between the pavement and the shoulder. We saw some pretty creeks and a nesting bald eagle before turning around and heading back into town.

Not a lot to see here as the visitor's center is closed. That being said, there are displays that can be viewed outside and seeing the dam from the viewing areas is impressive. Use the crosswalk to see both sides of the dam / reservoir. It's a nice drive along the south fork of the river and lovely scenery.

We visited the Hungry Horse Reservoir and Dam for the first time. The visitor center is informative with photos of the construction. The employees in the visitor center were happy to answer questions and tell us all about the dam. We walked across the dam and back to the parking area. This was a fun stop! Free!

At 564 feet high, Hungry Horse is one of the largest concrete dams in the United States. That in itself is a worth to look at. It is a long way down... We ended up walking across the dam from the closed visitor center to the other side to really get the ambiance of the dam. I believe they do tours but not at this time with the pandemic. It has 4 generators that provide power to the area along with flood control. We did drive up to the end of the road to see the great campgrounds and views of the Flathead River.

We camped at Lid Creek Campground along Hungry Horse Reservoir for 2 nights. The campground was well-maintained by the campground hosts and the scenery was beautiful! Be sure to stop at see the dam. If you are camping, there are no showers on site.

We saw a billboard for the Hungry Horse Dam after leaving Glacier National Park. Since we had some free time we decided to go check it out. The dam was actually a very cool place to visit and is only a few miles off US-2.
Hungry Horse Dam is 500 feet tall and produces over 400 megawatts from its hydroelectric power plant. The dam does not have a tour and you cannot go into it or see the hydroelectric plant, but it does have a visitor center with exhibits showing how the dam was constructed. You can also walk along the length of the dam to check it out from many different angles.
Visiting the dam is free, and it's a pretty area. I would recommend stopping there if you are in the area and are looking for something cool to see.

Just did the walk across the dam and looked at the lake because visitor center was closed. The water levels were down, so the "sink hole" in the dam was visable. Was a cold day, so we didn't spend much time. Nice excuse to get out and stretch our legs.

Does it cost anything to visit the dam?
Written 17 July 2018
Admission is free. A nice Visitor Center before the Dam. An enjoyable walk across the dam. On the other side of the dam is a large parking area with a huge billboard layout of the lake. Very well done. Enjoy!

Can you fish the reservoir and if so, what regulations are there?
Written 25 February 2016
Yes you can fish the area, suppose to be great fishing, as far as I know you will need a Montana fishing license. Check the Montana Fish and Game Web Site for more info.
