We stayed at the Best Western Hotel. The River Walk is right out the back door. It was quite refreshing to walk along the Missouri River, on a hot evening, and watch the boats. We saw numerous birds and squirrels. We saw white Pelicans, which is always a treat. Don’t miss this trail if you are in Great Falls. The trail is paved the whole way.

Technically, the Rivers Edge Trail is just the paved pedestrian/bike trail that runs the length of the city. At the east edge of the city, Rivers Edge runs into the dirt South Shore trails, which are excellent for mountain biking.
The biggest problem is the weather. Summer can be brutally hot and there is no shade, winter can be brutally cold, and when the temperature is nice, it's probably brutally windy.

Stayed in Great Falls before heading to Glacier NP and took a walk down by the river and it was beautiful. A lot of things to look at and some prairie dogs and ducks. Nice easy path to walk along, very enjoyable.

This walking and bike trail leads from downtown to Giant Springs State Park. The views along the river are nice and you will pass the dams and power plants.
There are a lot of informative markers and signs that explain the history of the area and the significance of the sights you are viewing.
There is also some interesting art.

Yes, you CAN ride from the city of Great Falls on teh soutn side of the river all the way to the Great Falls themselves. You have to ride some pretty challenging single track up and down the canyon (and endure some pretty aggressive daytime mosquitos, too, on the single track). It makes for an all-day adventure of about 32 miles from the center of the city...but a great way to see the town and the river during COVID

The River's Edge Trail is the best urban trail system in Montana -- and maybe the northwest. Trails run along both sides of the river. Long stretches are paved and are wheelchair accessible. Other areas are unpaved and are great for mountain biking or hiking along the river. Many areas feel "wild" even though you're in or close to town.

The views as you walk along the river vary from industrial to more nature. I have never been to Great Falls before and I found it a nice way to exercise and see a bit of the city, Cute dog park, skate park and views. Not too crowded. Windy the day I went.

In June 1805, Meriwether Lewis spotted an eagle's nest in a cottonwood tree.
This is why the Falls are named Black Eagle.
We stood there enjoying the view. We didn't forget pictures. Wow!
There was lots of thunder with all the noise of the waterfall.
Amazing and attractive!
A must see!

We enjoyed a walk along the river. We found it informative to stop at the locations such as the Lewis and Clark Memorial site. Unfortunately we were too late in the day for seeing the interpretative centre.

Great Falls has a reputation for not really being on the the cutting edge of outdoor recreation, but the work and effort they have put into the trail system on both side of the river is as nice as almost anywhere. The actual Falls are beautiful, and the views from the trails are spectacular. We often walk along the trails when we are in town for business or even just passing through. We are amazed at how few people take advantage of that opportunity.
