Rocky and moderately strenuous 3 mile hike. There are very few flat areas of the trail; it’s pretty much uphill most of the way. Bring LOTS of water...I’d recommend at least 1 liter per person. I’d also recommend trail shoes as there are many decent...More

I am not a person who likes an intense hike, and if you read lava lake is not then they are simply wrong. BUT! If you can give it an extra hour or so the hike is completely worth it. Yes it is a steady...More

This is a favorite of my family and we hike to Lava Lake every time we are in Big Sky. This time I encouraged my three girlfriends to hike to Lava Lake. None of the girls had ever even seen a mountain before yet alone...More

Good hike. A challenge for kids around 7, but we made it! The lake is beautiful, cold, and deep. One quick dip and we were on the rocks looking for the sun. It took longer than expected for the climb, but down was fast!

This trail is long (2-3 h ascent) and gets a little steep near the end for young kids (we took kids ranging 6-12). But well worth it once you reach the lake at the top.

Big chilly lake at the top is a great reward. Super green in September. Not crowded like other spots in Bozeman. We had a great hike with teenagers, even took a dip at the top.

August was the perfect time to hike to Lava Lake with some friends. Our host lives in Bozeman and picked lots of awesome things for us to pack in a few days' visit.

My whole family made the hike up to lava lake. The hike was a steady uphill climb of about miles, but not too strenuous. The trail was not too crowded when we went. The lake is beautiful and there's great fishing for those who want...More

This hike is not for little kids, being it is 3 miles and a harder hike I felt. My step-son (16 yrs) and I hiked it, it was well worth the hike, so beautiful!
