August was the perfect time to hike to Lava Lake with some friends. Our host lives in Bozeman and picked lots of awesome things for us to pack in a few days' visit.

My whole family made the hike up to lava lake. The hike was a steady uphill climb of about miles, but not too strenuous. The trail was not too crowded when we went. The lake is beautiful and there's great fishing for those who want...More

This hike is not for little kids, being it is 3 miles and a harder hike I felt. My step-son (16 yrs) and I hiked it, it was well worth the hike, so beautiful!

Lava lake is a beautiful destination, complete with the world's cutest critter, the pika. The water is cold enough to ice an injuries you have too! Warning: the tree-lined trail is covered with 6-12" irregular rocks. I had to look down the entire time to...More

Moderate hike but rocky -- worth the time and effort. The lake is spectacular. Not for the faint of heart to go in but you get used to it quickly.... go for it!!!!

This is a moderate hike that winds upward to the beautiful and pristine Lava Lake. It makes a great day trip, especially if you pack a lunch and your trout fishing pole. Plan to stop for a while at the lake before hiking back down.

This hike is not easy but manageable if you are in somewhat decent shape. 3 miles uphill but SO worth it!!! Nice views on the way up. I did not like the wobbly log bridge across the river but thankfully I made it across without...More

I wore a GPS device and covered 3.01 miles from trail head to the lake while gaining 1650 feet of elevation. Much of the trail is rocky and slow going. This would not be an easy trail for runners. I found it intermediate. The ascent...More
