About
"Our Lady of the Rockies", a 90-foot statue sitting atop the Continental Divide is the result of a dream and six years of hard work. With the help of generous donations and a wealth of love and faith, countless volunteers completed a seemingly impossible task. On December 29, 1985 "Our Lady" was placed on the East Ridge to overlook Butte, Montana. The base sits at an elevation of 8510 feet above sea level and 3500 feet above the mile high city of Butte. The statue, lighted and visible at night, is a spectacular sight to behold.

This tour is only taken by a private bus as the road is closed to the public. We signed up for it by calling their phone number ahead of time.
We met the tour at the Butte Plaza Mall. They have a small store at the mall and show a short film about the building of the statue before the tour. It is really interesting to see how they designed and then built the statue on the top of the mountain.
The drive took about 30 minutes. It is a dirt road that is somewhat rough and curvy, but the bus driver did a good job and I didn't have any trouble with motion sickness.
Once at the top you have time to go inside the statue and then walk around for pictures. It is really incredible to look down on Butte and the Berkeley Pit. I would highly recommend this for anyone interested in the views and Butte history.

First of all, there are no email confirmations for phone reservations but will oblige if asked for one. The roads up are private and bumpy. There are gates to keep trespassers out. The driver is skillful, and the tour is 2.5 hours long. There is only a vault toilet at the top. Before the tour, there is a 30-min documentary on how the statue was conceived, constructed, transported, and installed.

Amazing views from the site! It does take a little while to get there (30-45 min) and the vans roll going over the dirt roads the last bit, so that part isn't good if you get car sick (two in our family weren't in a good place, but not bad enough to need to stop). When you get there, you can see forever. Be prepared for cold weather! We went in July, and while it was in the 70's in Butte, it was COLD up there (8500 feet). The wind was whipping and while we all brought sweatshirts, they weren't quite enough. I think it was worth the bumpy drive to see the statue and especially the view.

This SHOULD have been a very nice tour, except it wasn't. I bought the ticket the day before, at the gift shop, for a 10am tour. When I arrived the next day at 9:40am, I was told, rather pointedly, "YOU are LATE!" Apparently there is a film that starts a half four before the tour. I knew nothing about it.
After the film, our van driver met us wearing a "I don't give a rat's A$$" t shirt and spent far more time giving us derogatory stories about his wife, then more stories about his ex-wife. And he was also flirting with one of the women. It was very negative and sucked the joy out of the experience.
Finally, a couple was allowed to bring their rather large dog (may have been an Alaskan Malamute). He was NOT a service dog and having him breathing on me was not fun. I am allergic to long haired dogs and despite protests, the driver would not allow me to move so that I didn't have to sit next to the dog.
Also, the road up the mountain is ROUGH. If you have a bad back, as the woman next me me did, you will not enjoy the ruts and boulders. If the van had shocks, they were long gone. She was whimpering in pain by the end. I bet the vans don't last long driving this road.

This was very disappointing. The movie to start off the tour was very old and everyone was packed into a small room in a run down mall. Then they packed us all into a school bus. Not an open seat on the bus. Well the bus broke down and could not make it up the mountain. We did get our money back but we wasted a lot of vacation time to not see anything. I guess the bus had been having problems and they sent us out in it anyway. Would be better to have a smaller van or bus and do more tours than take that big bus. It just felt like they were greedy and wanted to get as many as they could on the bus.

Our Lady of the Rockies is a beautiful white 90 ft. statue of Mary the Mother of Jesus. It stands on top of the US continental divide overlooking the city of Butte, Montana. It was touted as the 4th largest statue in the United States. There is a tour available, but as we were just passing through we didn’t look up information on that. I did take a walk around the grounds of our hotel to view and take pictures of the statue. It was a peaceful and comforting sight, looking over the area.

Horrible Customer Service
We arrived early for the 10am departure. We watched the movie, and I went to the restroom. I boarded the van at 9:56. After boarding, my husband informed me that Vicki from the gift shop chewed him out for my going to the restroom and not directly boarding the bus after the orientation movie. I was on the bus before departure time. Nobody waited on me. However, there were 4 individuals who missed the movie, and one of them was in the restroom delaying all of us for 5 minutes. They did not get chastised.
The road is terribly bumpy and felt dangerous. Our lady of the Rockies is magnificent, but I suggest you view from online and skip the dismal thing they call a tour.

Our Lady Of The Rockies is probably the coolest thing I've ever seen in Montana. I don't know what it's for, not gonna lie... but that's a big woman! She helped me when I was lost with my pregnant fiancee in the streets of Butte. Thank you Mrs. Tall Woman. (did you know this is one of the tallest statues in america??!?!?)

We were on a driving tour from Seattle to New York and had a few days in Butte. We had never heard of Our Lady of the Rockies monument back in Australia, but thought "We're here, so why not?". So glad we did! Very special place which we will surely visit again. Magnificent views over Butte and a spiritually uplifting morning. I believe that all of the staff (gift shop, driver etc) are volunteers, so please be understanding and just enjoy the experience.

Driving through Butte, it is easy to miss the hidden gem. Overlooking the town stands a 90-foot statue of the virgin mary, erected on the top of a mountain. Most people take a 3 hour bus tour to see this attraction. I elected to hike up the Maud S Canyon to the Continental Divide. It is about a 24 km round trip with 1,000+ meters of elevation gain. so it is definitely more for the athletic outdoorsy types. But the views are amazing and you really get an appreciation for the great surrounding landscape. Once you see the statue up close, it is all worth while!

Has anyone hiked the trail to the statue? Where is the trailhead? Thank you.

Nope only way you can get there is for their company (located in the mall) to take you. Lots of private land surrounding it & they post no trespassing.

I believe the bus runs every day - recommend you call ahead. They are quite friendly.

Hi, traveler, The ride seems a lot shorter than about 45 minutes. Our driver was excellent. It's not a ride for the faint of heart but going where you are going, you are protected spiritually. That's the way I thought of it and I was not the least bit scared. If you have a serious back problem, I would consider not going up. It's a ride where you are bounced a lot. But the end is worth it.You can only get to the Lady on their bus so think hard about going. It is wonderful. Enjoy!
