    Worth checking out
If you like museums and you’ll be spending any length of time in the Bozeman area, I highly recommend checking this place out. It might not look like much from the outside, but there are tons of interesting things to see and read about once you step inside. You don’t have to be from the area to apprecaite the effort being put in to preserve and display the region’s local history. My visit here was truly pleasant.

    Excellent Museum
My rather low expectations were significantly exceeded at this museum. They have a lot of information and exhibits about the history of the area and the jail. (The museum is located in the old jail.). My wife and I were really glad we stopped in. The jail-related subjects were very interesting. Lots of stories about the inmates, local murders, etc. The man taking tickets was very helpful and informative. We spent about an hour and a half here. You could spend a lot longer though as the place is surprisingly large. I consider this a must see sight in Bozeman.

    An under appreciated attraction.
When I attended college in Bozeman in the early ‘70s, this building was a jail. Luckily I never spent a night there. Now it’s a history museum, and a good one at that. We had a guided interpretative tour, and Larry was extremely knowledgeable about local lore and history. A must see if you are in Bozeman.

Fantastic visit to the Gallatin History Museum! The variety of the collection in this historical location is fascinating: jail artifacts, letters and multiple holding areas. There are records of people that were arrested and held over the years. The docents at the museum provided excellent background and details about the jail location as well as Gallatin himself. Albert Gallatin's rich contribution to the country was significant and enduring. There's free parking on the street and the location is easy to walk to check out other places on Main Street.

Great museum. In and out in 2 hours. Very hands on. Many great books for sale (purchased one 50% off). Learned a lot about the local area. I suggest for everyone. The staff was informative and really made the visit. Thank you!

For a relatively small museum, this is very nicely done. The docent and staff were knowledgeable and friendly. The exhibits are well done and informatively labelled. They have an impressive book store whose contents cover a wide array of Western-themed topics.

The gallows, use only once, was an interesting touch, as was the escape story.

This is an old jail that has exhibits of what happened in the jail from the founding of Bozeman to the time the jail was no longer used. The exhibits were interesting. But the lighting was poor making it hard to see things & many items were missing descriptions. Also, the staff was not impressive. The volunteer who took my admission when I got there started a tour for some people who came in right behind me without giving me a map or museum brochure. If you are in town stop by because this museum is unique. But, don't make a special trip to come here.

Acoustics and lighting not conducive to learning. Voices carry so for example when the movie is playing you cannot comfortable hear the information. It is stuffy and warm. Nice to see the actual architecture of the jail. Most of the information can be condensed into 2-3 sentences instead of 15. A collection of historical items that mesh into a museum.

Brilliant little museum, staffed by excellent, enthusiastic volunteers. A genuine insight into times past around Bozeman. Fascinating that it’s set in the old jail - with many original features remaining.
We thought an hour would be enough but more time would be wise!

The Pioneer Museum in downtown Bozeman is a walk through the early history of Montana, especially the area of Bozeman. I took time to read the cards in front of every exhibit and was very surprised at the historical details. The connections to Lewis and Clark and Yellowstone are right there to investigate. The building used to be an old jail and you can actually visit the cells (yikes). It had a desolate, haunting feeling to it and I wanted to make sure I wasn't in a room alone, there was something to these pieces that have been installed. I truly respect the pioneer life now, and this place shouldn't be missed.

On our 5th day of rain for summer break, we decided to go visit this museum. I had been saving this museum for some "rainy days". My boys are 8 & 10 & they love museums. They loved that this used to be a jail & that they could go into the jail cells. They loved the log cabin & the interactive things (pushing a button to hear a story or watch a short clip). It really is not that big, but they have fit A LOT into the building! Of course, I could not read all I wanted, b/c the boys kept wanting to show me something down the way. But, at any rate, it is a great little museum to visit & took us about an hour. (Could go longer if more things were read!)

We are so excited that you and your boys got to explore our museum and some of the nooks and crannies that are unique to a building that started life as a county jail. Thank you for taking the time to write this review and we hope you can come back and visit us again!

We had driven by here many, many times without realizing it was there! Large, beautiful trees adorn the street and yard in front of this hidden gem of a museum on West Main Street in Bozeman! The location in the old jail makes it all the more interesting as you can step inside the cells. Both men and women were detained here during the early days.
The displays are really excellent and the community has been very generous by donating or lending items for all of us to see. You really get a feel of days gone by when you visit here. The staff, and especially the Executive Director who took the time to visit with me, made us feel welcomed and were a wealth of information. We really enjoyed our visit to this museum of local history.

This history museum is in the actual former courthouse and jail, and the gallows (inside) where a convicted man was hung in 1924 is still there. Now I don't care what you say, that is something you'll never see in another museum! They also have a handgun (probably used by an Indian) from the Custer massacre. And all the jail cells are still there, intact, ready to incarcerate YOU. A neat little tour guide describes the exhibits, then you can explore both floors of the museum. There is lots of cool stuff here. Come on, it's only $5!
