- Greg T2 contributionsA Small but Exquisite Museum packed with materialAmazing museum with so much interlinked material covering the beginning of computing through Enigma and Bletchley Park to the era of personal computing. A whole section covered Apple's role in history with extensive examples of hardware. The story of robots, again from the beginning through to recent times. A further leg covers the early space era and how the computer related to its activities. Even managed to explain quantum computing and the future of AI. A number of significant items of original and unique exhibits that really bring it all to life with lots of interactive parts that interested a computer and sci fi buff as well as my family Finally a really good store with interesting books, games, toys and other less seen items. Had a great time, but did feel a bit old as I had used a number of the exhibits in my working career!!Thanks for the terrific review! And we agree, it can be a humbling experience to see the tools and tech we grew up with presented as "artifacts" in a museum context. But that's the unique thing about a computer museum: the history is still unfolding! - Atalanda C4 contributionsAmazing!I wish I'd given myself more time but I thought since it is a small museum I could move through in an hour. I was wrong. There's so much great info and an incredible display of different machines, I likely needed two hours to absorb it all. I'll remember for next time I'm in Bozeman. Definitely a stop for those who love history and technology. We're so glad you enjoyed your visit - and we hope you'll stop by the museum again the next time you're in Bozeman!Written 1 July 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 3 October 2023
- Howie W41 contributionsDon't miss this amazing collection! Not a total surprise since this was so highly recommended by friends in Bozeman - but, WOW. Incredible assembly of items from 4,000 years ago up to current times. Really, if you have even a passing interest in computers, communication devices or coding, this museum should be top of list for you! I'm not a computer geek but I was fascinated. Great staff orientation to get you started too. Thanks so much for the glowing review - and please thank you friends in Bozeman for their recommendation!Written 1 July 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 27 February 2024
- jehenson81Washington DC, District of Columbia24,928 contributionsAll to MyselfThis museum is not far from the Museum of the Rockies or the MSU stadium and is tucked away in a business park. I never would have found it without my GPS. When I got there, I discovered I was the sole visitor for the morning and could move through seven or eight rooms at my own speed. The first two rooms are a history of the computer, then they have an Apple computer room, a NASA room, a personal computer/gaming room, a pop culture room and an enigma machine room (along with a focus on Turing’s decoding device). It was very cool and brought back memories of my first computer and how far technology has come. Had a blast. We are a little off the beaten path, but well worth a visit - and it sounds as though you timed your visit perfectly! What a treat to have the place to yourself, which is one of the benefits of visiting during the off season. - Pioneer7177964 contributionsNot just for nerds and geeks! If you think this museum contains only dusty iMacs, you're wrong! This place has something for just about everyone (except maybe luddite purists!). Subjects one might not normally associate with computing/calculations, such as weaving or movable type,Thanks for the enthusiastic review. Nerds and geeks are welcome, of course, and as for the luddites, don't forget about the slide rules!Written 1 July 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 22 April 2024
- LeiToddMoravia, Iowa25 contributionsWorthwhile visitI didn’t expect to enjoy this museum as much as I did! I did not expect much since it was located on the MSU campus and looked like it was in an office building. It was packed full of interesting facts and incredible artifacts. It included electricity, computers and AI. Due to arriving late in the afternoon, we only had just over an hour to roam through; however, we could have used more time. It was well worth the time. Thanks for the 5-star review! And you're right, the museum is unassuming from the outside, but - just like the Tardis in Dr. Who - it's a lot bigger on the inside. We're happy to have exceeded your expectations!Written 1 July 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 May 2024
- Indra B9 contributionsFun, interesting, nostalgicGreat place - glad we found it - love this kind of stuff! Robots and computers, the Gutenberg press, even a Norton bombsight from WW2 (apparently a very rare, top secret artifact that my partner was over the moon to see in person). Thousands of years of human communication are all here, and they made it fun. GenXers can even revisit their childhood video games if so inclined.Wow, what a terrific review! We love this kind of stuff, too - and we're thrilled to hear that both you and your partner enjoyed our exhibits. - Douglas ESan Anselmo, California7 contributionsSuper, informative, short stop at a small but worthwhile museum. Very close to the Museum of the Rockies as well. This museum is truly a hidden gem! They pack a lot of fascinating material, displays, and insights into a relatively small place. Madelyne (sp?) gave an excellent introductory overview of the museum and its artifacts, chock full of great stories (ask about the display with Bill Gates' phone number). The tiny gift shop is also loaded with high quality books and items for all ages. We are so glad we stumbled across this and wound up spending much more time in it than we had originally planned. Enjoy!Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 2 July 2024
- Rob OKenilworth, United Kingdom206 contributionsFantasticGreat museum with some really amazing and diverse exhibits telling the story of computing from ancient to the future. There's an Enigma encoder, a original first diy Apple computer signed by the Woz, and the US version of the most important computer ever, the ZX81. So many interesting exhibits with educational materials. Staff were friendly and helpful. The only thing missing are Acorn computers, the British ancestor of ARM RISC, the chip designers who made the modern world.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 August 2024

The museum is somewhat small, but PACKED with great stuff. They have so many original pieces from the last 100 years, I couldn't believe it. Additionally, there's a great amount of backstory and relevance discussed for many of the pieces.
I had a great time and was quite impressed, so I gave it 5 stars. My one request is that they would update some of their comparisons to today's technology. Some of the comparisons were from a few years ago (2GB SD cards when 256GB are readily available today, etc). Overall, though, I had a great time.

So glad you enjoyed "nerding out" at the museum! And thanks for the gentle reminder to make sure all our exhibits are up to date. With technology changing by the minute - and a museum packed with great stuff - that's a constant process!

The tour started out by a short introduction by one of the staff. He covered a short introduction of the history of computers and thereafter we were able to roam around the museum to look at parts of computing history.
I liked the Mac and Enigma exhibits the most.

We visited the Museum a few days ago and were very impressed by the material on disiplay, FANTASTIC! It is one of the best Museums we have ever visited through the years. There is so much information you wouldn't imagine. We recommend it to anyone visiting Bozeman in Montana. Dylan was extremely informative, and we enjoyed his tour.

Visited the museum in early September 2022. A great guide and a must see for those of us who have lived through the development of 'modern' computers. Some interesting exhibits including one of the first Apple's and Steve Woz looking young in his picture.
This is a brilliant initiative (30 years old this year) and hopefully it will go on to record the emerging history.

Certainly not a large collection, but some very interesting displays and older models of early computing machines, including an Altair and early Apple models. Very comprehensive detailing of the Enigma coding machine. Terrific sizing comparisons of early vacuum tube and transistor digital computing behemoths versus today's integrated architectures. Can easily spend a couple hours engaging with all of the displays and placards. Not really catered to children, but adults should be fascinated. I loved it!

Loved this. I wasn’t sure what to expect. We stopped here between other places on a whim. But it was excellent. The tour performed by one of the staff was excellent and there are many very unique or original items that you couldn’t find anywhere else. An original Mac signed by woz. Original pages printed by a Gutenberg press. Parts of an original eniac vacuum tube set. Very cool. Highly recommend.

Easily one of the coolest museums I have visited. It is on the small side but I spent hours here being fascinated by everything! The brief introductory tour provided a great summary of the development of modern computing. The Apollo and Enigma exhibits were very informative. The quantum computing exhibit could be better, but it is currently being built out. Definitely worth a visit!

The computer museum in Bozeman is extremely charming and boasts a number of quite extraordinary artefacts. You are welcomed by appropriately geeky volunteers who give a nice explanation. The gift shop has very interesting books. Overall a highly pleasant and worthwhile experience!

Thank you for your question. No, Paul Ceruzzi was not involved in the establishment of this museum. He is a good friend - but the museum was founded by my wife Barbara and myself.
