After being accepted to several highly selective and selective colleges, my son narrowed his top 2 to Wash U and Univ of Chicago. He chose Wash U for numerous reasons and is in his second year here. It's a top notch school, gorgeous campus, great teaching staff, numerous on campus opportunities, # 1 dorms, excellent communication and they dont nickel and dime you with every little thing like most colleges do. Oh and generous financial aid. We hadn't even heard of Wash U until his college counselor suggested looking at it so it actually was a last minute addition to his school application list. He visited on a football invite which included a school tour and boy were we impressed and felt like it was a great fit for him.
Although there are maybe 6-10 kids who attend from his high school, he's met some great new friends and being on the football team helps too. The only thing he doesn't like is that there's nothing to do in STL and they dont have excellent restaurants. Very true, but the people are nice and mom hopes that translates to less partying and more studying :-). Some of his other school choices were NYU, Penn, USC, & Georgetown which are all in major cities with a lot ore to do and places to go unlike STL. Despite that he still enjoys it and would make the same choice again. He says, "it's only 4 years of my life & I'll go someplace urban for grad school".
Another thing I love about him being in STL is the flight is only 1 hr from home, there is absolutely NO TRAFFIC EVER (even during normal rush hour) commuting from the airport, Wash U, or our hotel area. It takes us no time to shop, eat, go from point A to B, get to/from airport, etc. which saves us so much time and allows us to get so much done while we're in STL. We would've spent more time and $ if he went to school in NYC, Philly, DC, Boston, Chicago doing all the necessary things to move in/out of dorm, get to/from campus for football games and visits. It's so easy peasy and no stress with him being in STL. And despite what people may think, the Wash U campus and surrounding area is VERY safe. This is not East STL people. Totally different area with totally different risks and issues.
There's really nothing negative I can say about Wash U. FYI - We are an AA family who live, work/school and play in a diversely populated area of the country and within an urban city. Some comment about the lack of AA or Latino population, but there is a very decent representation and my son feels very comfortable in the campus environment, has bonded with several students and feels very much a part of the culture and student body. Overall, A++++ for Wash U. If you're unsure, go visit and see for yourself. It's the best kept secret of selective schools in the country.

Between the engineering building lies a walkway to honor my wonderful aunt, a veritable force of nature and inspiration to so many. She was not even a high school graduate, but she was smart and funny and devoted to the Lord. She raised nine children all on her own. She impacted and raised a number of her grandchildren and STILL had the time and the heart to love on so many people, including me. Her fruitful life didn’t stop at her progeny but was robust with cookies, veggies and whatever extra energy she had to give.
I’ll never forget her.

I love to walk the campus of Washington U. The elegant buildings all have a little different architectural style. Sculpture are spread through campus. Plenty of walk ways.

No other dining hall compares. Tour the school just for a chance to eat in the dining halls. Stir fry in Bear's Den on the South Forty is especially good - or get a lemon-lavender donut at one of the cafés.

Washington University has just completed a new capital project with newly consolidated engineering buildings, an expansion of their art museum, and much more. Go visit the East End to see the new projects.
Additional construction continues and should be completed by the end of 2020.
Our son attends Wash U and loves it, as do all of his friends. The school is a supportive and collaborative place to learn. It seems to have a good social structure but is not a wild party school. It is an excellent academic university while also being one of the most beautiful schools in the country.

I visited the campus for this year's Relay for Life event. I didn't know much about the university before visiting, but as soon as I stepped on campus I loved it. Great time of year to visit - students in the grassy commons area playing soccer, studying, and just hanging out. I loved the classic old buildings - and I hear it's a great place to go to college. Was happy for the opportunity to visit.

Gorgeous campus, serious academics, outstanding tour guides and faculty we spoke with. Really impressed! Love the residential ‘colleges’ (not dorms) in the south 40. Very walkable and safe feeling campus. Wash U just shot to the top of my kid’s college list.

Washington University already had a historic Frederick Law Olmsted landscaped campus and is the only university campus to host an Olympic Games. It now has additional sponsorship to further expand the east end of the campus anchored by the expansive Ann and Andrew Tisch Park and Gary M. Sumers Welcome Center.

Began the college summer 2017 tour season with a visit to Wash U in St. Louis. Had heard many good things about this prestigious university and was not disappointed. We were met with very friendly and helpful staff at every step of our visit. We attended an excellent orientation by Arianna Williams and followed with a campus tour with a current student, and then lunch on campus. The architecture of the campus is impressive, eliciting a Harry Potter feel, similar to what we saw of Georgetown and Duke earlier in the year. Yet, one can't beat the Midwest hospitality. At one point after the tour, we were getting our bearings and a friendly local stopped and asked if we needed help finding anything. Wash U is a top ranked academic institution that may not be as well known as some other schools in the Northeast, but they have particularly strong pre-med, highly ranked Olin Business school, and many other strong majors to choose from. Also, it is a small private University that provides a lot of flexibility for trying different areas of study, double majoring, adding a minor... The proximity to Forest park and surrounding museums, bike paths and other recreation, access to public transportation and light rail to downtown and/or the airport makes this a great location for any High School student who will be applying to colleges in the Fall.

I forgot to tell you not to try and park on campus. The campus has very limited parking, and it is by permit. The Kampus Kops are quick to ticket and tow.
Ask the person leading your tour to see if they can get you a parking pass.
Strongly suggest Uber or Lyft.
