About
The Lewis and Clark Boat House and Museum brings the remarkable journey of 1803-06 to life at our riverfront base of operations in historic St. Charles, Missouri. And we share the story of the Expedition at destinations throughout the Midwest via our unique traveling fleet of replica boats and our experienced corps of re-enactors, the Discovery Expedition of St. Charles. We are an official stop on the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail, on the banks of the Missouri River, part of the Historic District of St. Charles, Missouri and alongside the Katy Trail State Park. We offer a close up look at full-size replicas of the boats used by Lewis & Clark, offer films about the expedition and encourage visitors to imagine the hardships and experiences of the expedition.

I had a gap between a wedding and reception and wanted to see as much as I could in St. Charles. This is a cute little museum about Lewis and Clark’s journey west which started in St. Charles. The museum itself is small but is packed full of information and dioramas. As a pharmacist I especially appreciated the really in depth display dedicated to medicine and herbal remedies of the time. There’s a 40 minute documentary video playing on loop which is a nice supplement to the displays. The gift shop is adorable and has a lot of nice books and souvenirs. Entrance is only $5 a person and we spent maybe around an hour total including watching the movie. Definitely recommend stopping by if you’re in St. Charles, especially for history fans.

We always enjoy historical experiences and this was a good one. The video was well done and many of the displays were good and seemingly accurate. The woman who was hostess was glad to hear our question about why Sgt. Floyd's name was on the list of bicentenial partidipants...after all, he was one who died in 1804 or 1805. She was looking into it!
Summertime might have been better to see the keel boats in action, but we enjoyed the models

This is a small museum that delivers big on history and value. There is a full size replica that you'll see on the ground floor. The museum itself is on the second floor. They have wonderful murals above the exhibits, a small stream and some stuffed animals. The exhibits are wonderfully done and detailed. They have beautiful small scale dioramas that chart the journey west with special attention to the various native tribes and how they helped the expedition to survive. Well worth the stop.

This is a very informative stop if you are interested in the Lewis and Clark journey. There are replica boats which have been used in several films and a neat museum that highlights all aspects of the area and trip from wildlife to events - plenty to read and see. They show a film which gives a greater appreciation of what transpired. Decent sized gift shop with plenty of parking available. It was a nominal $5 to enter the museum.

I liked this place because it was very informative and it tells all about Lewis and Clark. Seeing the documentary film about Lewis and Clark was very educational. They also had some good exhibits and they had a little waterfall inside one of the exhibits. Also they had a garden and where you can walk through and you get the view of the Missouri River.

Five dollars to do the tour which could take a couple of hours. Educational and fun. Beautiful view. Great movie, about 40 minutes, with magnificent scenes. Scenes recreated of buildings of the period. Animals found during the journey. Lovely view of the Missouri River. Gift shop with many educational books and toys.

If you are at all interested in history in general and Lewis and Clark in particular, this is a must. Even if you think you know everything, you’ll come away even more informed.
Be certain to ask the ladies any question about anything, they’re delightful and will help you with any request.

Dioramas were crafted nicely. The bull boat is worth the admission….and there’s also the long boats. There are other artifacts worth checking out as well. The video narrated by Jeff Bridges contains accurate historical information in an easy storytelling style. Very good.

On March 9, 2023 I came to see historic St. Charles, but nothing was open until 10AM, as I arrived about 8:30 AM. Did some walking around the park areas, then went to the L & C Boathouse when it opened at 10. This is just a small place and they charge $5 admission. I previously knew quite a bit about Lewis & Clark as well as Sacagawea and others. I have also previously visited Fort Clatsop in Oregon as it was their Pacific coast endpoint.
I did learn more however, particularly about the different transportation they used.
