We parked in the free public lot at the Lewis & Clark Boat House in St. Charles at 1050 South Riverside Drive. Only a couple dozen cars were doing similar on the late June Saturday morning we visited; it seemed like the lot was large enough for a couple hundred cars. We exercise walked 10 miles along the trail by venturing out and back from the lot in both the upriver and down river directions. The trail was wide, flat, and nicely surfaced; easy for bike riding. We did not see any mile markers.

Flat trail that runs along the Missouri River. Good for people watching. Wide enough so you don't feel like you will run into others or get run over. Statues and historic signs to read along the way. Able to easily go to restaurants on Main Street.

Great biking, very nice reception from all people. Fun time. Trail is pretty much flat with a few uphills but not very many. Lot of places to stop. We parked our car in the casino in St. Charles (let the desk know) and they said that was fine. Gone for 6 days. Came back and picked up our car.

The Katy Trial is a Rail to Trail path so it's off road. It's crushed gravel and the State keeps it well maintained. There aren't any hills since the trains didn't like steep inclines. The path covers beautiful scenery and goes to many little towns on the way to Clinton. We did it over 5 days of cycling and would like to have spent more time. It's not hard at all and lots of great towns and places to eat and stay to make a great trip.

My husband and I took our 14-year-old son on our biking adventure, starting in Clinton and arriving back in St. Charles 6 days later. It was a fabulous family time! The trail is so well maintained and SAFE.

Our family of 6 rented bikes and biked on the Katy Trail. We started the trail right in the middle of Saint Charles near the Missouri River. The trail is flat and runs along the Missouri River. We especially enjoyed the part where we got off the Katy Trail and biked through a beautiful forest.
We biked this trail in the spring but it might be too hot to bike this in the summer. We brought a picnic lunch and ate our lunch at one of the several parks that are situated along the Katy Trail.

Don’t believe the YouTube hype. Could be great but is not. It has devolved into a casual day bike trail. Sections poorly maintained and littered with branches and trees. Not well funded by State. COULD BE SOOO MUCH BETTER. Large sections are food and Water deserts. Plan carefully. We had sections 40 miles between water at the “station markers”. The trail businesses that exist are mostly closed during the week or have failed in the vast majority of the small stops. Not tent camping friendly. Tent campers avoid Coopers landing. Noisy, no showers, only porta- potties and you are trapped to each their food and no chance for breakfast nearby.

Beautiful walk along the river. Great way to spend a morning before the shops open on South Main Street. Felt safe and friendly

My husband and I biked in an event that was (supposed to be) a 20-mile poker bike ride along the beautiful Katy Trail from Augusta to Weldon Spring and back. Trail was mostly flat, crushed gravel and well maintained. Be aware of some highway crossings with turns close to crossings; use extreme caution. Vault bathrooms occasionally along the trail that are not appealing to the nose, but get the job done.
There was a detour off the Katy Trail into Klondike Park (St. Charles County Park System) that added an extra 1.5 each way with both blacktop and gravel trails with two very steep hills. I am sure the detour was due to this year's spring/summer flooding. Round-trip was just under 23 miles.

A friend was in town from Amsterdam and wanted to ride bikes. We rode the Katy Trail and had a great time. The trail is very well maintained and mostly flat since it’s an old railroad line. In the Defiance area, there are some fun places to stop for a drink and bite to eat.

We are visiting from out of town, is there the ability to rent a bike?
Written 1 May 2018
In St. Charles, you can rent bikes at the Bike Stop Cafe. You can also rent bikes in Defiance.
There are also places in other towns. Where are you starting from?

Are there places to eat along the trail? We are starting the route in St Charles
Written 25 August 2017
There are several places along this route. Especially off Main Street. If you travel west during the summer there is a fresh produce store that serves food also.

Hi! Wondering if you can give me more information about the forest off the trail, mainly where is it? That sounds pretty neat.

The Katy Trail use to be a train line. They took the tracks out and now you can bike ride, jog or walk this trail. It goes quite a long way and you go through some great little towns. The area I know of is St. Charles, MO and this trail goes along side the river also.
