Thomas Hart Benton's life is present in both his home and his paintings, and both are preserved at Thomas Hart Benton Home and Studio State Historic Site. A trip to the home and studio of the renowned painter, sculptor, lecturer and writer offers a glimpse into how the talented Benton lived and worked. Benton converted half of the carriage house into his art studio, which remains as he left it. Visitors can still see coffee cans full of paintbrushes, numerous paints, and a stretched canvas waiting to be transformed into another of his masterpieces. Thomas Hart Benton died in his studio in 1975.

This is an interesting place to visit if you are interested in art. Thomas Benton was controversial during his life and visiting his home and studio sheds light on his character, formative influences and his family. We were very lucky to have an extremely good guide, a student in al local high school with an obvious passion for the artist,... More

This is a nice and modest house in a nice, old neighborhood. Learn how the artist worked and lived. The tour guide was knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. There is a small charge for the tour. It doesn't take long and is well worth it.

The Thomas Hart Benton Home and Studio is one of my favorite tucked-away places in Kansas City. It not only lets you see the studio space where Benton created his distinctive work -- still with his brushes and all the accoutrements that were there in his day -- but allows you inside the Benton family's home. It too is preserved... More

This is one of Kansas City's hidden destinations. Located in an historic neighborhood, Benton's studio and home are preserved. The tour offers visitors a chance to see where the artist painted, with insights into how he created his work. I loved seeing and hearing about his initial sketches and how he used the natural light to paint. It was also... More

One big advantage of artist home museums is that you get to focus totally on one artist and Thomas Hart Benton's home is certainly one of those. The guide was great and had many insightful comments into his work and times. Worthwhile visit.

Very interesting personal tour. Staff was great. The tour started in the studio and progressed to the home. The staff was very knowledgeable and gladly answered questions. Visiting would be difficult for those with limited mobility.

All of the original furniture and studio materials still in place. It is like the artist just stepped out for a few minutes but you can still feel his artistic spirit and the love. It helps you to appreciate Thomas Hart Benton's art even more once you stood in the studio where he created them. The tour guide was passionate... More

We had a wonderful well informed guide. We were back in Kansas City for a visit and not having gone to the Benton Museum/House before seized the opportunity.. This tour gives great incite into the artist and the period of time that he lived in Kansas City. Very few areas were of limits. The home is located in a beautiful... More

The Studio is just as it was at the time of his death. The guide stated the house and contents are 75% original from the time Mrs Benton passed away. There is an original painting returned to the family after Thomas Hart's death. the art work was unknown to Thomas' family and is not listed in any of the artists... More
