NICE HISTORICAL PRE INCA & INCA RUINS
Apr 2019
Tambo Colorado ruins is about 50 km from Paracas or 210km from Lima and in the middle of a hill desert area. Therefore it is not possible to see and spend time unless you go to Paracas from Lima or vice versa. That opportunity came to us as we were traveling from Lima to Paracas by Peru Hop bus and they provided a stop there. We went in April 2019 and it was 35 degree C around due to desert area. We were lucky that we had 5 guides (1 guide and 4 trainees) from Peru Hop Company and all of them explained the area, each room and the other details. Inca kingdom was about 6500km long from North to South( From Ecuador to Argentina) and Inca had created two North-South roads for transportation, communications and route of Chaskis or runners for carrying mails. However, this place was operating from Pre -Inca time and further developed during Inca period. This Tambo was on one of the North South road provided some administrative office, resting places for Chaskis and other important persons on the way. Even there was a portion designated for the Incas. There are many steps going from the bottom to top of the mountain. Higher level rooms were only for higher level people. Please see my photos. Some areas were painted and decorated; some of the colours are still remaining. Please go here with sunglass, water, suncream and hat as it will take an hour to see at least and there is no shop to get the essential items. In April, it was tolerable but I wonder what will happen in Summer. My honest advice is to avoid it unless it is on your way or you have a great interest in history. Overall it was good and has lot of historical values. At least I have enjoyed it. Thanks to Peru Hop for providing the opportunity to see one of the Pre Inca and Inca historical place.

Definitely worth the taxi fare (s/200). Be sure to test the echo in the central plaza. Now, imagine thousands, chanting, singing, drumming, dancing. Must have made the valley quake.

We went to Tambo Colorado because it was part of a stop on our Peruhop bus. Glad we didn’t make a day of it. Not interesting. Frankly, it’s a bit sh8t.

The archeological ruins of Tambo Colardo are set about an hours drive from the town of Pisco in Peru. The site is set in the desert surrounded by the Andes and is outstandingly beautiful.
We had booked a tour with a guide through Emotion Tours Peru and our guide pointed out lots of interesting sites as we drove to the site. He also explained a little of the history of the Incan people.

When we reached the site we began our visit by looking at the small museum with explained the history of the site.

Afterwards our guide took us to see the ruins themselves. He led us through the maze of rooms explaining the significance of each and the history of the Incan people.

Our guide was very knowledgeable and was happy to answer any questions we had.

Stopped by here from a cruise ship. This Inca village/town is very well preserved and the history is very fascinating. However, it was very hot and dusty. Take plenty of water.

Tambo Colorado was well worth the hour & a half coach ride from San Martin. There is no shade so don’t forget your hat, sun screen & plenty of water. It’s an uneven short walk to the main buildings where they allow you to wander through, gaze on & realise how clever this ancient civilisation was. We were told, nobody knows for sure, but it’s thought that Tambo Colorado was a Staging Post en route from coast to the mountains. Nobody actually lived there. We climbed higher, looked down into the valley, they’d chosen strategically we thought ? Get closer to the buildings & you’ll see bursts of original colours, red, ochre & some black, so it must have stood out vividly in its glory days ! Just visiting allows you the privilege to imagine what it must have been like. Afterwards we perused the stalls & made use of the clean facilities. Worldwide why is there always a long Q for the ladies, never for the men’s ?

It was not worth the 3-hour roundtrip ride from the port of Paracas. The site was interesting to see and learn about. The guide only had basic knowledge and got a little lost in one area. The bathroom facilities only had two stalls making for a long wait after the bus off loaded. The site was not nearly as impressive as other native American sites in North and South America.

We stopped at Tambo Colorado with PeruHop bus company after the originally planned slave tunnels in Chincha were unavailable due to flooding. The grounds were super cool to see, and learning the history, engineering and mechanics of the Incas was fascinating.

More importantly: WEAR SUNSCREEN. Don’t think you can burn? You will. Covered in a hat and sleeves and pants? ME TOO, and you’ll still get fried. Going literally under the cover of darkness in a multilayered tent? I don’t care, that Inca sun god will scorch you into oblivion and you too could have a forehead and neck made of beef jerky. For the love of god, Coppertone, sponsor this place.

We took this half-day excursion from the Port of San Martin which took some 75 - 80 minutes by coach. Interesting commentary on the way made us realise how the industrious locals farmed, with very little water, a huge range of vegetables and fruit. The ruins themselves have been a work in progress to save what is left. They now have a small museum which gives you an overview of the complex, there are toilets there, and often a few souvenir and handicraft stalls. We had a local tour guide to show us over the main features and to tell us of Incan practices and life. It was very hot, and as echoed by others, ensure you have hats and water. Tambo Colorado really impressed us. It was truly evocative and has left us with indelible insights into this ancient civilization.

Tambo Colorado is the ruins of an Incan Administrative Center. We were taken to the site by South American's Secrets when the navy cancelled boats going to Islas Ballestas. The site is over an hour drive from the San Martin port. Having seen Mayan ruins in Mexico and Central America, these were our first Incan Ruins.

Our guide Liz took us through the small museum describing the history and function of the site. Then a guided tour through the ruins explaining the function of the various rooms. After being abandoned for hundreds of years there is still some yellow and red pigment on the walls. The window openings are all trapezoidal in shape. Unfortunately there is a lot of graffiti scratched into the walls. You definitely need a guide to understand the site.
