The poor man's Galapagos is what Isla Ballestas off Paracas is called in various marketing materials. The clever person behind this claim should be ashamed.

During a 2-hour boat trip with Paracas Explorer, we managed to see

2 sea lions
A number of seal pups in the far distance
Several invisible penguins, which the guide claimed to see
Some unidentified birds, perhaps cormorants and seagulls
Back on land: 1 pelican, which was fed to stay close by
Additionally, some caves and a natural arch in the island's rugged cliffs

The species we saw the most of were - humans! The sea was teeming with boats, all looking for exactly the same as us. It was like being on a safari in a zoo.

Comparing this meager 'species richness' to Galapagos should be considered a criminal act.

This place is so amazing! The only way to see it is to take a boat tour out! You can see so many variety of sea life, birds, penguins and sea lions. So cool!

We took a boat tour to Ballestas Island from our cruise ship. The operator was ballestasexpeditions.com. We boarded from a marina in Parascas......it was chaos. There are multiple operators and many boats using the same pier. It was very crowded and difficult to keep track of the guide. While the boats were in good condition, the seats were very close together. I am tall (over 6 foot) and could not get my knees in the seat......ultimately, I sat on the bench in the back.

The choas and tight seating aside, the wildlife and rock formations were very nice. We saw sea lions, penguins, and many other birds. The ride to and from was fairly smooth but there is some spray (you might get wet).

This is an enjoyable tour......they just need to be better organized at the pier.

Really great to see all the wildlife. The way to the islands is longer than the actual tour, but we saw penguins, boobies, sea lions and star fish, so it was worth it. Here's a tip: try to be on the right side of the boat. Those of us on the left definitely got more drenched!

You definitely have to go!!!! I got to see sea lions from such a short distance that I couldn't believe it!! The tour guides are well prepared, they speak English very well and also speak some Greek! They will take you on a great trip!! The village is Lovely, by the sea. As you look the boarding area on the right side in front of the sea there r shops. Find a guy that makes his own jewellery. It s unique! Haven't found them somewhere else!

The perfect tourist trap from Lima! From a city that has little to offer a getaway where you have little to do. Also know as “poor man’s Galapagos” the islands are surrounded by merchant ships and fisherman’s boats. You see a few animals, if you are lucky: little penguins, small sea lions and seagulls, and maybe a dolphin. Nothing impressive.

This was one of our favorite experiences in our recent Peru trip. There are great views of ocean-meets-desert during the boat ride, including the Candelabra marked in the sand. We were able to see dolphins, penguins, diving terns, and dozens of sea lions!

A beautiful place where nature is still without the human touch. I felt there like in Jurassic Park surrounded by thousands of wild birds, penguins, sea lions, and other wild species of animals in their natural environment. It is only a boat experience but it is still worthy to visit and see a bit more from the pure nature. Thank you 🤩
