We decided to make this a stop on our way back from Lagos to Lisbon. So glad we did what a wonderful surprise- the 360’ views were incredible and it truly took you back in time. Love our visit!

I was told about this place awhile ago and I'm glad I took on board the recommendation. The place is absolutely wonderful with the castle at one end of the village which is surrounded by the walls. It is a beautiful place with wonderful views and nice restaurants and bar to take in the atmosphere.

This is a lovely stop. The fortress village sits atop a hill with amazing views. There are little shops and cafes just outside the castle. (I even picked up two very reasonable bottles of wine in one of shops for our evening's refreshment.) Just below the village is Alqueva Lake--the largest manmade (artificial) lake in Europe. It was a very pleasant afternoon

This is a magical place to visit in eastern Portugal. Remnants of the Roman presence , and mideval conquistadores .
Be sure to find Donna Isabel’s restaurant
right outside the castle( east side ).
She is legendary with a typical Portuguese culinary experience with the food . We were fortunate to bike the area as well .

One of the nicest Castelo in Portugal.
This time I visited with a group of mine (I am a tour guide from Israel) and we had a lovely local guide - Ju Maria Gamado (highly recommended for the region). the structure is amazing and the views are striking beautiful.

One of the most beautiful castles in Portugal (and there are many to compare). Very impressive site with gorgeous views around.
Walking there is sometimes not easy and steep - be careful but do not give up. The entire town tiny but stunning

The castle, which is primarily walls and stairs, has some fantastic views of the surrounding areas. Not much to really see of the castle itself and you’ll need to be quite confident and sure footed to get to the highest areas.

From a distance it looks a perfect fortified hilltop village surrounded by its medieval walls. And up close it is even better. There are multiple car parks near the entrances as you wind your way to the top, there is no need to try and enter the village by car as everything is a short walk. You enter the town through one of several gates in the town walls and will then be walking on the narrow cobblestones streets mainly running parallel with each other, uphill towards the castle, downhill away. For a tourist site there are actually not too many tourist shops, but plenty of restaurants. Just a delightful pretty place. A pity the huge church, white and visible for many miles as part of the hilltop village, has been closed for some time, awaiting renovations we were told.
Although the fortified walls make for quite a large structure, the castle itself seems quite small. You enter and walk up to the walls of the central courtyard with views over the surrounding countryside. Internally it is structured like an arena with tiered seats. This is not in keeping with structures of this age and seems a new addition for the castle to be used for modern events. You can go up the main keep, but this offers just slightly higher views.

Loved this castle and the whole charming town of Monsaraz. Views to die for here. Beautiful little shops too. I'd never seen a bullring in a castle. Very special.

Monsaraz is one of the gems of Portugal and after the major urban centres of Lisbon and Porto, should be one of the first in the list of places to visit when touring Portugal. Monsaraz has preserved its medieval buildings and town walls, although settlement on the hill dates from prehistory. The walls proved ineffective as the town passes from Christians to Muslims, back to Christians and back to Muslims and once the Muslims were defeated it passed between the Spanish and the Portuguese. These days it's possible to walk along part of the walls and castle and see the splendid views they offer over the surrounding countryside. Well worth a visit and highly recommended. You cannot drive into the town, but there are several carparks outside the walls and then a short walk of 100 metres, or so, into the town.

Dear Patricia, near Sao bras are 2 nature reserves, Rocha de Pena near Salir and Fonte Benemola near Querenca. Also it is very nice to drive the N2 from Sao bras to Almodovar, a nice winding road in the serra.
