About
Ebenalp is the ideal starting place for captivating walks in the Alpstein massif, whether you prefer a leisurely ramble or a vigorous assault on a summit. With our modern cable-car you can reach the 800 Meter higher located Ebenalp in just a few minutes. From Ebenalp, a short walk on a well-maintained hiking trail passes through the Wildkirchli Caves to the hermitage and the chapel. The trail then continues along a rock face to the famous mountain hostelry Aescher (open from May to the end of October). The hostelry Ebenalp can be reached in 5 minutes from the mountain-station and offers excellent meals and drinks with a great view. A bit further away, the hostelry Schaefler can be found, also with a stunning view and great foods and beverages.

We park our car in Wasserauen. Although we were there a little over 8 hours, there were already many cars.
Parking price is fine and can also be paid via app. That is really ideal in Switzerland.

Furthermore, there was a whole queue for the cash register.
Outside there is just a vending machine to buy a ticket yourself (German / English) and you can pay by pin.
This allowed us to walk past the line and still in the cabin upstairs. Given the line, I think we would have had to wait two rides.
Tip: think of the vending machine, which is outside on the property.

The ride to the top was sometimes a bit rocky and the cabin was quite full, but if you could see something then the view was beautiful. From the top, Ebenalp, you can do beautiful walks.

We walked back to Wasserauen via Ebenalp, Wildkirchli, Seealpsee.
With a longer break at Seealpsee we took just over 4 hours.

Super-competent cable car operator, proud of his neighborhood and the beauty around the Wasserauen area; speaks perfect English (from Buffalo, NY!). We had the good luck to be the only visitors at the time we were there. This should not be missed.

The ride was scenic, smooth, fast and enjoyable. The operator spoke some English and was very helpful in making sure we saw a herd mountain goats. The top has beautiful views of the Appenzell Area. This is the only way to get to the Äscher hut unless you want to hike up to the hut.

We hiked down from the top to Weisbad.

Make sure you show your Swiss Rail Pass when purchasing tickets. We got a 50% discount with the pass.

To find parking nearby and avoid queuing up, I recommend arriving as early as possible. Throughout the high season operating hours start at 7.30h in the morning.

During the six minute cable car ride you will be elevated 723 metres in altitude. It is not cheap, but it is definitely worth it.

After this relatively short ride with the cable car from Wasserauen, you find yourself in the middle of a most fantastic alpine landscape with amazing views. You can see Lake Constance, the Rhine valley, the Allgäu Alps and countless summits of the surrounding Alpstein, a subgroup of the Appenzell Alps in Switzerland and other summits beyond.

The upper terminus is the starting point for a number of mountain hikes. There is at least one that suits your plans.

There are round tours that take only one hour like the one to the world famous Äscher mountain hut and restaurant, one of the most iconic and most photographed images in the Swiss Alps. On the way you hike through a cave, to reach the nearby “Wildkirchli” hut. Located just a few minutes away is the Äscher mountain restaurant. Man, what a beauty!
The number of good photo opportunities seems unlimited.

In six to eight hours you can also hike all the way to Mount Säntis, the highest summit of the Alpstein massif. Note that this particular hike is quite challenging and designed for well experienced mountain hikers. In windy or stormy conditions it is recommended to rope up or better not go at all!

At one point a sign seriously recommends to "walk your kids on a leash" for safety reasons. Leashes are for rent at the Äscher restaurant.

If you look for a medium length hike, pick the two to three hour route to the Schäfler mountain hut and restaurant, which is the gateway to Säntis. It can be easily combined with a visit of the aforementioned Äscher mountain restaurant.

Look up the Ebenalp web-site. There are numerous maps and hiking suggestions.

Great place to travel. Beautiful secenery, good climate. Ascher hotel is a place that you should go once in lifetime.
How to go there ...
1. You can use cable car to go up and walk down to ascher hotel (about 30 mins walk) and have breakfast there then walk back to cable car to go down
2. Use cable car to go up and walk down (3 hours) you will see both ascher hotel and beautiful lake (beware to choose suitable shoes)
3. Walk up and use cable car down
4. Walk up and down

We arrived and the operator said that the cable car would probably close soon due to high winds, so we bought a ticket to the top and decided to hike down. The operator spoke English and gave us good advice regarding walking down with the kids, ages 7 & 9. At the top station, the views are fantastic and you can see the Bodensee. There are very clear hiking guides at the station and clear signs along the way. We went down through the caves (nice display on prehistoric inhabitants there) and Wildkirchli, down towards the Seealpsee, had a picnic there, and went on to the bottom. Some of the trail is a little challenging for a novice hiker, but there are sturdy cables to hang on to if you feel you need. We stopped close to the bottom to see the cows cross the path. They were pretty unconcerned about us being there. After the hike, we drove the very short trip (5 min?) to walk around Appenzell and, of course, buy local cheese. It was a pretty great day, and fairly inexpensive for two adults and two kids.

The whole experience was mindblowing. We had taken a train from Zurich to Wassarauen and then the cable car up to Ebenalp. The whole ride was smooth..and the views were fabtastic. Once up there we hiked down to the caves...church and then to Aescher. It was like a dream come true for me. After having the worlds best rosti we hiked up again to the cable car and then down to wasserauen station by gondola. Just loved every moment. Highly recommended.

Very well maintained and operated. If you have the 1/2 price railway card for adults it works. It is fast and saves you 600 D+ for beautiful hikes at the top!

Appenzell is a wonderful place for hiking/walking. It's very convenient with Ebenalp. From Appenzell, just 12 minutes to Wasserauen by train and other 6 minutes by cable car to Ebenalp. There are severals hiking options and you can sit there enjoying the beauty of nature.
I've been there several times during summer/autumn and I definitely will come back again. I heard that it's also great place during the winter that I hope I will have chance to visit in that period.

beautiful cable car ride. Steep walk down took us 3 hours but was well worth it. Restaurant at lakeside past the midpoint of the trail. ends with walk through pastures of cow with ringing cowbells.
