Jimmy Rodgers invented yodeling and he toured much of his life spreading his style of country music. I almost did not visit his museum because he had the morals of a house cat but decided not to be so judgemental. I did give him only 4 stars because of it though.

We spent about one hour at the Jimmy Rodgers Museum in Meridian, Ms. The docent had grown up in the City and provided lots of interesting stories about Jimmy Rodgers and the music industry of that era. It's small, but dedicated to a man that is considered to have been the father of country music. Watching the old footage of his performances are very interesting. From rock, to blues, to yodeling, Jimmy Rodgers holds an important role in American Music.

Admission was $5 with a AAA discount. I think it was $10 without. It is in a park, next to an old train, in a rough neighborhood. The door was actually locked when we got there but the attendant let us in when we knocked. There is a lot of Jimmy Rodgers memorabilia and artifacts from his career, life and family in the one room museum. There are a couple of guitars, an old beat up mandolin, a steel guitar and 2 pianos. One piano is gorgeous. There is a 42 minute video which we did not have time to watch. I know a lot about country music and did my college internship at the CMA. My daughter has studied the origins of rock, blues and country music. We are both professional musicians and found this museum mildly interesting. My son sat on a bench and took a nap. I think if you were not a huge JR fan, you might regret paying to visit the JR Museum. We have visited several old artists' museums over the years while on the road and this one is like most of the others. The artifacts are arranged and explained nicely and it is always interesting to get a historical perspective on hairdos, costumes and instruments. I think my favorite thing was to see the massive trunk he traveled with! We were in there for less than 30 minutes.

The museum is in a very bad area. We would not take the risk if going back . The area has drive by shootings. A room with some old furniture.. Not impressed.

Small museum. But lot of things to see. Sometimes GPS does not give you the best direction. Abundant parking space. 15 and 45 min video in the museum to watch. If you have time go for 45 min video. You can buy his CDs , prices ranging from 15-18 dollars. If you live here, go and visit this place . Donate to keep it going.

Even if you are not a country music fan you will find this museum very interesting. It explains the history of country music which pretty much started with Jimmy Rodgers. The carousel is not far away and then you can eat at Weidmann's restaurant which was wonderful

Upon entering with my husband and children ages six and eight, the lady informed my children would not be interested so I need not tour. So we didn't and saved the $20.

I loved this place so much!

Do not miss it if you are anywhere near Meridian, MS.

As a singer and musician it was humbling and inspiring to learn about and see first hand the sacrifices that Jimmie Rodgers made to leave this awesome legacy of music for people to enjoy for all time.

The staff couldn't have been more friendly. They were knowledgeable and passionate about Jimmie Rodgers and all of the wonderful artifacts that are in the Museum.

Thank you Susan and Bill for an experience that gave me tears of joy and a lifelong memory.

To enjoy the museum, I think you'd need to be old enough to know who Jimmy Rodgers was. The times were hard and his was harder than most. He lived with steam trains and died early with TB. Suggested as the contributor of some of the early great country music. A legend and pioneer.
The museum is small and somewhat hard to find. It's array of memorbilia is somewhat disjointed but a very good snapshot of the man.

We visited the Jimmie Rogers museum on our way to the carousel museum nearby......it was a please tell surprise. The museum is packed full of artifacts and memorabilia. The man behind the counter was so nice that he kinda walked with us through the museum telling us all the tidbits...very knowledgeable.
Again, very nice to visit and remember the day and also pay tribute to a great singer.
