Worth a stop if you're visiting Jackson
Having some free time while getting ready to fly out of Jackson, I decided to stop here for the free tour. The tour was capably led by a very pleasant retired gentleman, who eagerly shared his love of history and this building. The building itself is beautiful, and I very much enjoyed seeing its architecture and the chambers where the House and Senate meet.

    Beautiful building
This is definitely worth a visit if you are in Jackson. We were there between guided tours so we did the self tour option. Lots of information sheets are provided so easy to get around and see things. We were able to park easily outside on a 2 hour free parking slot.

    Self-guided Capitol tour
There is parking around the Capitol area a short walk to several downtown sites. I entered via a security checkpoint and being off-hour did a self-guided tour instead of a guided tour. There is a sheet on the table you can take to help with the tour.

It's worth the tour! Stunning building!
We read about the Capitol and Mississippi history on our trip down, so we planned on a quick stop in to stamp our book and take a few photos, but a tour was starting right as we walked in. I'm so glad we stumbled into the tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and a very proud Mississippian. He absolutely brought to life the grandeur of the building. This Capitol is hands down the most beautiful Capitol we've seen yet. Built as electricity was becoming mainstream, there were light bulbs everywhere that lit up the building like a Broadway stage! It was absolutely stunning!!

Parking - the H/S spots are for when the house and senate are in session it’s our understanding that you can park in those street sites if they are empty. We are in an oversized vehicle so we stopped and asked the guard for his suggestion on parking and he allowed us to park out front.

Security - as with all Capitol buildings you will be asked to open your purse and step through a metal detector before touring the building.

Grab one of the architectural information booklets and explore the building at your leisure. Some areas will be closed as it is an working government building. If you are participating in the “visit Jackson” passport the stamp is located on the second floor at the visitors’ desk.

We’ve visited a fair amount of Capitols on our travels and if I’m honest I’d say we felt the least welcomed at this location. The guards were kind and walked us through the scans, to the register book and handed us the free booklet. The four women who we wrongly assumed were the visitor guides/helpers knew nothing of the passport stamps or the building and made it very clear we were interrupting their phone time. So when we made it to the second floor and were greeted and welcomed to the Capitol we were delighted. She not only knew what we were talking about with the passport stamps but was excited to tell us more about the building. She turned our whole visit around; so if you feel unwelcome when you visit head on upstairs.

Favorite things to note: since electric lighting was relatively new they went all out with lightbulbs for this Capitol it’s quite impressive. The fourth floor floors are made from glass bricks allowing light to come from above and below.

We have traveled to a lot of cities across the country and seen a lot of state capitols. The state capitol of Mississippi is also a marvel of architectural design and we loved riding by it and seeing the amazing people working for the state hard at work. We decided not to take the tour due to time restrictions.

The Mississippi capitol is a large well maintained building. We took a self-guided tour as there were lots of school kids touring that day. We saw the old Supreme Court chamber along with the two legislative chambers. You could tell that they are in session as the desks are are full of personal objects. We even saw the Governor in the Senate chamber.
The rotunda is pretty and they have some nice art at the top of the main staircase. Also, each of the legislative chamber have stained glass ceilings, and a little dome of their own. On a sunny day they look good.

The rotunda and the house chamber were under construction when we visited in August 2023 so they were filled with scaffolding. Many capitols across the nation seem to be undergoing renovations when we visit. There also happened to be a city-wide power outage when we got there so we toured in the dark. The staff and volunteer tour guides were very nice, and we even got a behind-the-scenes peek at “The Vault” since the senator was not there at the time. I wish our luck would have been a little better for our tour. If you are thinking of going anytime soon, consider calling ahead to see how the construction is coming along.

I took a guided tour of the Capitol while visiting Jackson for a conference. The tour guide did an excellent job providing a historical overview of the interior and external features of the Capitol building. Great photo opportunities.

We chose the Mississippi Capitol for our sightseeing during our stay in Jackson. Arriving on Monday morning, we were fortunate to get a tour from volunteer, Steve. He did an excellent job of pointing out the history and hidden facts in the building. Do not miss the picture of author John Grisham in the House portraits. The building itself is beautiful and compares favorably with most state capitols that I have seen. I recommend a visit, and a tour, preferably on Monday morning, especially when the legislature is in session. Look for Steve, the guide with the bow tie.

There were no group tours due to COVID but we were able to take a self-guided one. All of the workers we encountered were very helpful. Since the legislature was not in session, we were even able to go into the chambers for both the House and Senate. There are beautiful stained and leaded glass windows throughout the building.

The Mississippi State Capitol is located downtown Jackson. We visited on a busy and interesting day, since a special session was in progress.

The present building is the third capitol in Jackson and is a beautiful Beaux Arts building, dating from 1903. We opted for a self-guided tour and had some nice supplementary information from the excellent staff.

The impressive Rotunda with the beautiful illumination was a great experience. The grounds too are really worth a visit.

Really great tour with Bill! His architectural knowledge was exceptional. Really enjoyed learning about the features we take for granted but we're great feats of the time, like the lighting. Also, love the history about how the building was financed, the history of the land and the previous capital building. Really impressed with the quality of the tour. We were there for over an hour and a half and I loved every second of it! Highly recommend a tour with Bill!

The building caught my eye and since there was lots of available parking right there I had to stop and have a look. Great architecture and the grounds are very nice. Out front is a Liberty Bell, which apparently is a reproduction and a Monument to the Mothers of the Confederacy. Worth a visit if you're in the area.
