This course sits right on the edge of the Gulf. The view is outstanding as well as the staff. Unfortunately, being close to the water has its disadvantages from Hurricanes and storms. They have come a long way and are making a great effort to bring the coiurse back to its original charm. We played in early October and had a great time.
The course had some rough greeens but very playable. This is a friendly community style course. This isn't Pebble Beach, but you can have fun at a much lower cost!.
There is no food available so you need to eat prior or bring some with you.

A sign right on Hwy 90 says exactly that but when we played there on Monday they charged us $43. When we inquired about this we were told, "It's an old sign." WTF....then take the damn sign down, or fix it so it reflects the correct price. If it was $33 and not $30 it might be workable.....but a $13 difference is a increase of 30%. Ridiculous....then the guy at the counter had the audacity to tell us "you got a bargain". That course is NOT worth playing for $30 let alone $43

Great Southern is a tough course to review. If this course was inland in the middle of nowhere it was get a lower review. However, it's location has some beautiful views of the Gulf on several holes. It has a tremendous history, and as a golfer you have to appreciate that. Do yourself a favor and go to their web site and read the history of this course. From the PGA events played here from a bygone era to the famous golfers who teed it up at Great Southern.
GOOD -
1. Amazing History, most golfers appreciate history.
2. Great warm up course at a lower price point (price/value may still be an issue for some here). If you are playing at some of the more pricey courses, Great Southern will be a nice warm up.
3. Some great views as mentioned. Nice Club house bar for beers after golf
4. The Greens have an interesting shape most are rectangle in shape and small - this is a element of the Donald Ross design, so a different look to be sure.
BAD -
1. General condition of the greens aren't good. If you want some putting practice - this is not your course. Greens are slow, sandy and bumpy. Go with the two putt rule and move on. However remember if you just want to get out and play a round it offers some interesting holes and allows for you to hits a variety of clubs off the tees and I think it has some nice par 3 's.
UGLY -
1. Sand Traps are a bit ugly. Some are actually OK to hit out of, some aren't. However they are well placed in terms of design.
2. Off the fairways - a little rough especially under some of the massive oaks. Sand, roots don't make for a good place hit a golf ball. I know - keep it on the fairway and greens and you will not have this issue:)
OK, i think you get it. Worth the visit if you have the right attitude about the course - the GOOD, BAD and UGLY.

Took a chance due to history of being originally designed by Ross and decent GolfNow pricing.
The first unique trait is it being located on the side street parallel to 90.
The clubhouse looks great as you enter.
Another unique trait is nine holes on each side of the railroad tracks with first 8 and 18 on the Gulf side of tracks.
It is a wide open track with some pretty live oaks mixed with a few palm trees and pine trees with a unique live oak off 18 fairway being laid down at an angle.
The green complexes are unique as they are square and relatively small. They were fuzzy and slow with the periphery of most greens having dirt patches.
The fairways were in poor shape as well with some mud, some dirt and tight grass in places with a few weeds and the rough had lots of weeds.
The few approaches with visuals of the Gulf (4 & 18) were pretty sweet and made it fun. The finishing approach at 18 in between two live oaks with view of the Gulf made for a wonderful ending.
The course simply was not in good condition. There is some fun holes and it is definitely forgiving being wide open. Pretty indifferent view for me.

We played in Sep and knew that it would be hot but did not think it would be made worse by the condition of the course. To be nice the best thing about this place is the cost. The folks in the clubhouse/restaurant were very cordial and the golf carts were in great shape. Once you hit the course it was downhill. Hard to tell the fairway from the rough with all the weeds. The greens were spotty and also had weeds. As a matter of info most of the greens were turtle-backed and the fringe was.. you guessed it weeds.
The back nine was more interesting with some holes that could be challenging if they were mowed and had real tee boxes. The proximity to the Gulf made it appealing yet not enough to overcome the feeling of playing cow pasture golf.
With some sand in the traps and some serious maintenance this course could be a pleasure to play. For now I would pay the extra to play one of the other great local courses

the course was in awful shape and the greens were almost unplayable I know this is winter in Mississippi but it was really bad Had a rain early that am but at noon when they directed me to my cart I got in to a very wet seat so that started the round on a bad note Entrance was bad and didnt even have a bag rack Next day played a difference that was even cheaper and it was in much better shape You get what you pay for but not at Great Southern

The course has a nice layout and design. As others have mentioned the course is a true Donald Ross design. The greens are square and small for the most part. Some very fun designed holes but the condition of the fairways and greens are not the best. Lots of dead grass and sand. Price was a little high ($58 for 18 on a Sunday) for the conditions but overall a fun day of golf.

OK, if you love to play golf and history, it has a little of both. Oldest course in Mississippi. Built in 1908. Right on the water. Beware on the back nine, you really need to bring bug spray. The mosquitoes will eat you alive, lol!
Greens aren't $100 plus status, but its a fun play. Not a lot of traps so would be a good course for a beginner as well.
