Did the section ending Carlton Peak trail starting from Temperance River. Took our time to enjoy the many waterfalls in the first half mile, from about mile one to three basically trail through heavily wooded area, final steep hike to the top gave a wonderful view of the lake.

This 300+ mile trail includes some fabulous scenery along the North Shore. It's pretty ambitious to bite off the entire trail, but easy to take in short segments of it as you have the time and opportunity. Note that some parts of the trail are not in the best of condition.

We've hiked the shorter trails within the trail system - Oberg Mountain and Cascade River (our favorite), but we plan to hike more in a couple of weeks. It never gets old and is the best hiking in the state!

This was my first hiking trip. I'm in the military and very self sufficient and prepared for these kind of trips, but I have to say this trail took me by surprise. It has amazing trails and views. BUT...The trail was so washed out from the rain that we were literally jumping from tree roots and it was in some... More

What a fantastic idea - a 300 mile hiking trail from Canada to Duluth MN that is kept up with volunteers and donations. We've hiked several sections of it and it ranges from well maintained wide paths that are well marked to mud and grass covered barley visible sections. But the high availability of campsites, river, views, and friendly folks... More

I hiked a couple of sections of the SHT near Two Harbors today. Both offered the varied terrain typical along the North Shore, with a fair amount of hill climbing. The payoff was the beautiful scenery and views of Lake Superior. The parts of the SHT I was on were in good shape and presented no obstacles. I highly recommend... More

Have only done short day hikes on the SHT. The first was near Cascade River where it follows the high ridge through a fern forest. The second was today following the Gooseberry River for a while. Both were wonderful trails.

The Superior Hiking Trail (also called the SHT) is a 310 mile trail that starts just south of Jay Cook State Park near Carlton, MN and ends near the Canadian border. This trail generally follows the ridgeline along Lake Superior on Minnesota’s North Shore. There are campsites on the northern 270 miles of this trail so you can thru-hike this... More

The entire Trail is just under 300 miles long, but there are many easily accessible short trails within the system that are amazing. I've only been on a few of the more popular ones—Oberg Mountain (technically a spur trail), Carlton Peak, Split Rock River, Baptism River. All are worthwhile!! While beautiful anytime of year, these trails are especially stunning in... More

This trail is maintained by volunteers. At nearly 300 miles long, it passes through state parks and private land. There are many campsites along the way. If you don't want to backtrack, there are shuttles for hire. I recommend parking where you'd like to end and catching the shuttle to the trail head you want. That way, you don't have... More
