Highly trafficked biking and walking trail that travels 6.5 miles from downtown Stillwater out to Duluth Junction where it intersects with The Gateway Trail. Well maintained trail with the most enjoyable parts being along the St Croix River in Stillwater and along Brown's Creek as the trail heads west from the town. Middle section of the trail is less interesting as it travels along a golf course and busy county road. Although there aren't any terribly steep ascents, it is a steady gradual climb as you travel west away from Stillwater. I would recommend parking in Stillwater and traveling in this direction which provides a pleasant and easy gradual descent back into town where there are many places to grab a refreshing beverage at the end of your ride.

We came to Stillwater from an hour away for the day with our electric bikes. It was a very hot Saturday in July. The Brown’s Creek trail runs parallel to a creek in the woods so you don’t feel the heat. We rode one way 6 miles and back into downtown Stillwater and then the 5 mile loop south of Stillwater into Wisconsin and across the historic lift bridge into Stillwater. There are a lot of people who use the trail, pedestrians and bikers. Trail is in good condition. On the Wisconsin side the pedestrian and bikes are two separate parallel paths. If you are traveling through Minnesota and have your bikes with you don’t have a lot of time, this is the trail to do. We started riding mid morning and had lunch in Stillwater afterwards.

The Brown's Creek state trail connects downtown Stillwater with the Gateway trail system. It is scenic and enjoyable to walk, run, hike, or lesurely bike. There is some geo caching along the way as well.

If biking please remember to announce your approach to other trail users before passing them.

This is a newly opened trail built on the former Minnesota Zephyr railroad tracks. It is a spur off of the Gateway Trail, which it intersects at "Duluth Junction."

The trail is newly paved and cuts along the southern face of the Brown's Creek ravine. Grade is about 2% uphill from Stillwater out to the west, which is a factor only for biking and roller blading. Scenery is great. The trail is heavily traveled by walkers, jogger, bicyclists and roller bladers/X-C roller skiers. As a bicyclist, I caution others to ride at a modest and somewhat cautious pace, as many families have small children with them. There are also groups of power-walking ladies who make it a point to show you that they "own" the entire width of the trail. If they themselves weren't so wide, this probably wouldn't be an issue. But it is. And they weigh more than me. Dog walkers with long leashes also are present and there are occasional loose dogs.

It's a good trail for families with kids, as the scenery is spectacular and there are many pull-outs with informative signs describing the land and vegetation. At this time, there are no bathrooms west of Stillwater.

While not a route for serious riders, it is a nice, mellow ride.

I like to ride my bike on this trail except in winter. If you go early in the morning on a weekday, it’s cooler and less crowded. At this time of day you generally only have experienced runners, walkers, and other cyclists. It’s later in the day that you get women pushing strollers down the center of the path or groups of walkers spread out across the path. What’s up with that?! You have to SHARE. Also, walkers please walk on the correct side; if not, don’t move while cyclists are passing. Or, you could step off the path, just don’t cross the path in front of the cyclist. Honestly wrong-way walkers, you all act differently so cyclists have NO IDEA what you are about to do.

Other than uneducated traffic, there generally aren’t any problems on this trail. There are a lot of trees on either side for most of the way which is very nice, but watch out for squirrels.

While the body of this trail is typical of the paved bike/hike pathways throughout Minnesota, the newest of the state trails starts in downtown Stillwater at the eastern end and connects up with the popular Gateway Trail at Brown's Creek's western terminus. The five mile hike climbs up and away from the scenic St. Croix River and ultimately passes along the edge of three golf courses as it follows the route of Brown's Creek westward before joining the Gateway Trail that runs from St. Paul northwest to Pine Point Park just about 5 miles north of Stillwater. The Brown's Creek Trail links up just 3 miles south of the park giving hikers several options on where to begin/end a journey along this pleasant route.

This is an awesome black top trail that extends from Stillwater Mn.on an old railroad bed so the incline is easy to bike or walk. It connects to the gateway trail from St. Paul and goes for many miles through the country.

I recently took my first bike ride on the Brown's Creek trail and really enjoyed it. The paved trail starts in downtown Stillwater and runs for approximately 6 miles before connecting with the Gateway Trail. Leaving Stillwater is a gentle uphill ride for most of the 6 miles, so the return trip is a pretty easy downhill run. Most of the trail runs through wooded areas, so even on a sunny day it's not too bad. There's also plenty of parking at the beginning of the trail so access is no problem

Brown's Creek State Trail is a wonderful place to fully engage with nature. I love to walk the trail and my favorite area is between the Mile 1 and Mile 2 markers. Ferns, wildflowers, birds, the bubbling Brown's Creek. 8/29/16 - -Today's bonus, encountering an adult black bear walking across the trail by the Stonebridge Road overpass. Nature is truly at its best!!!
