Having hiked a lot of the North Shore trails we decided to visit this park and were nicely surprised. We took the middle trail and had a nice payoff of cascades at the end. Will return to try out some additional trails.

I'm doing the MN State Parks Hiking Club, and we're camping up north to knock a couple off. I read the reviews and a blog of a family doing the same thing. That said, I was still surprised. For a Minnesota park, it is strenuous....More

Now that all of the backpacking sites are reservable, it can be hard to decide where you want to go before checking out the sites themselves. Hope this review helps! THE TRAIL I wanted to see all of the empty backpacking sites....but the trail prevented...More

First off, my husband and I are new to backpacking this year. We chose site #16 for a challenge because it's a 4 mile hike. We've learned that you never know what you're getting into with distance (ex. choosing a site that is 0.7 miles...More

It's called Lake Benson, all within the park. A wooden boardwalk goes all around the lake. It's about a half hour walk (3/4 mile).

This is a primitive park inland from Lake Superior with a lot of hiking trails. We took the easy walk on the boardwalk around Bensen Lake - nice scenery, no people around

The trails in the entire North Shore area are wonderful. Manitou State Park didn't disappoint. A nice hike for all ages.

Very secluded and rustic SP. if that's your thing than it's perfect!! Trail to campsite was not to scale. But the site was worth the effort and breathtaking! Sleeping next to the river = amazing! great water source!

A rather remote park and challenging up and down hike with a variety of terrain from bogs and rocks to a smaller downhill Boulder field and then into an uphill stair climb, once you get to The Cascades it's all worth it though! I would...More

Couple other questions: When is snow usually gone by the spring? How deep is the Manitou River? Is this a river that is more creek-like that kids can wade in and play around with us supervising? Where can we get a... More

The bugs weren't too bad. But in areas where it is more crowded with bushes and trees there were more mosquitoes around. In general August is supposed to be better for bugs. Maybe you could cover more of yourself with... More
