I can't believe no one has reviewed this museum. Yes, it's a bit hard to find way on top of a hill in a residential area, but the trip up is very interesting as well.
Located next door is an interesting old building in a park like setting where you have beautiful views overlooking Red Wing and the river. This spot is a great alternative for those unable to climb barn bluff with much easier access to the gorgeous view.
The museum is full of displays that are of local interest as well as to overall Minnesota history. Lots of stuff about the native people who were in Red Wing before we were.
Plan to spend lots of time at this amazing little gem.

I spent the day visiting five museums in Red Wing and the history center was my last stop. I was very impressed. It's is a large facility and very worth the admission. Lots of exhibits of different subjects in history. Very clean. Plus a beautiful view if the city in the park outside. Especially if you are a museum lover, I would highly recommend.

We spent around an hour here and could have spent more time if we wanted to ready every single display in depth. They have a wonderful history to tell and some amazing artifacts, but it’s extremely text heavy. I understand it’s a county museum and funds are limited as to what they can do, but I think if they presented the information in a different way I’d be more inclined to engage more. I don't think children would get much from a visit here - again, much too much reading and not enough to engage a younger mind.

This building houses lots of neat artifacts from long ago. Sometimes I felt like an exhibit had so much written about it that I tended to skip it and go on to the next one. I loved the section that had part of an old house and the items were found in a house 150 years ago.

Good range of exhibits. Organized and well presented. Looking for family history of one of original white settlers and the volunteer was helpful.

We primarily wanted to see the Rural Electrification project exhibit. Goodhue County was the site of a study in the 1920s that showed electrifying farms increased profits 50% in the first years - warm hens lay better; warm cows with ample water give more milk, etc. ASABE recognized Goodhue County, NSP, and the Univ. of MN for the partnership that led the way in electrifying rural America. Good exhibits and a welcoming hostess made this a pleasurable experience.

Considering the incredible location and facilities, the actual museum is a little disappointing. Go on a free day and you'll get your "money's worth."

One of the best view high above the River in Red Wing. Nice museum, with lots to see about the early days of Red Wing, Goodhue County.
