Unlike pedestrian malls in European cities, this mall is just a busy byway with buses going back and forth. Although there are some stores, there are better places to stroll and to shop. The one saving grace is the Mary Tyler Moore statue.

A nicely landscaped pedestrian (and bus, look out) street. Various restaurants (some a bit unusual food styles) for lunch or dinner. Many stores are on the 2nd floor of buildings (for the skyways) without signs so don't be afraid to go in. And food courts for less expensive lunch. Some days in summer there is a nice farmers market along the mall.

There were many great-looking eating places on Nicollet Mall, but besides that there were a few chain department stores and that seemed like about it. I was hoping for more unique, interesting, trendy shoppes and boutiques. The Nicollet Mall experience really fell below my expectations.

We walked thru and there are just to many homeless people, people that seem nuts preaching and people that just look like they are up to no good. Its mostly restaurants and some stores. If your in the area for something else it will work but not worth going out of your way for.

Over the past few years, I have been to this area several times now, and I see more each time of what I'd rather not see. More and more homeless people walking around or sleeping, more and more people who may indeed me harmless but do look like people I would assume are up to no good, more and more trash laying around all over the ground, etc.
Maybe I just never noticed these things before, but I think it's more likely that the quality of this area is on a downwards slide now.

We visited the Nicollet Mall and there were many storefronts that were closed. As we walked further down the mall, we did go to Macy's, which was huge and had a good shopping experience there. We then ate at one of the restaurants, went to Walgreen's, and were done in about 2.5 hours. Not many people there on a Saturday.

First of all, it's important to note that Nicollet "Mall" it is not a mall n the suburban-types-go-shopping sense; it's more a mall in the "huge shopping/business district" sense.
What Nicollet Mall Is:
*An 80-square-block area of downtown that includes upscale chain stores (If you like designer labels, you'll be in heaven!), a busy corporate environment, plenty of fantastic architecture, and more
*The place to go if you love Target and would like to visit their 2-story store
*A great place to see a show
*A wonderful place to find great cuisine from all over the world
*Overwhelming if you don't have a guide and don't have a clue where you're going
*A great place to people-watch
*Pronounced like the girl's name (Think Nicollette Sheridan, and then forget, because she's a whole other topic)
What Nicollet Mall Is Not:
*Not pronounced liked the French explorer's name
*Not clearly defined for tourists, so it's hard to know where to start
*Not a place to go if you prefer cute little boutiques or mom-and-pop shops
*Not an all-day activity (unless you're shopping or seeing a show, of course!)
To be honest, I'm sure there is more to do than shop, eat, and see shows, but we were on a budget, and we were a little overwhelmed. We enjoyed people-watching, had a good lunch, and headed out.

Good spot to walk around and enjoy some shopping and good restaurants. There was a lot of drunks on this street. Me and family was approached by many asking for money and using profanity all along Nicollet Mall. Very few police was seen, none walking the sidewalks. If they want to improve downtown, put a stop to the harassing drunks. Restricted our walking around to daytime and early evening, we figured to was even worse at night.

I loved the free buses. It’s impeccably nearly like Disney. Tons of great restaurants.
It’s a high tourist/convention center. So, as someone who served on a urban planning commission I could not reconcile why some people with very loud, seriously drugged up behaviors were waiting for buses in this amazing area. I’m from the DC area so I am not easily intimidated. I knew the one guy that was shirtless was messing with us (8 pm and still light out) to try to intimidate us. His mom or relative was beyond high.
I hate to mention this, as this should be an amazing place with the city design. It didn’t make sense to me. Too old to be engaging. It doesn’t fit. After inquiring at the Hyatt I found out there is a huge high rise low income housing very close by.
Great tourist site and low income housing with drugs rarely mix.
The Nicolet mall is well laid out with this exception. Lots of restaurants and outside eating. Free shuttles up and down the area (they should come more often).
But, Or was an impediment to have the number of homeless and drugged up people I saw. I compare this to Georgetown in DC or Old Town Alexandria in Va. if you want to keep the tourists the city needs to handle this better.
I was traveling with two other women and we didn’t feel in danger. But it wasn’t pleasant a few times. If you are with others and keep your wits it’s a fun area.
I hope their planning includes some laws or security to keep bus stop areas and homeless more at bay. It could be a major deterrent for this area.

I was at the Nicollet Mall on July 26, and the Mary Tyler Moore statue was not there! Where did she go???
Written 29 July 2015
The statue was temporarily removed while the street was under construction. She's back on 7th and Nicollet now!
Written 3 January 2018
We've been there as early as 10:45 and things seemed to be open. If you have a specific destination in mind, I suggest you google their website.
