Average trip. We arrived at approximately 7 pm and made our way towards the trail leading to the waterfall. There were numerous amounts of places to park in the parking lot, and the trail to the waterfall was easy to find. The waterfall itself was just a short distance from the parking lot, and did not feel like it belonged in its current space, as there were commercial buildings in the distance. There was a gazebo nearby that provided the best views of the waterfall, along with a paved path that provided views of the water flowing below us.
Tip: I recommend spending 15 minutes here if you truly want to see everything.

Vermillion Falls is located near the center of Hastings inside of Vermillion Falls Park on the corner of Vermillion Street (or Hwy 61) and 25th Street. It is short walk from the parking area to the overlook for the falls. If you are near the Appleby’s and the giant ConAgra mill then you are close. The waterfall used to be used for powering the giant mill next to it on the river bank.
I went to the Falls on a Sunday afternoon with my wife and we had a good time looking at the falls and hiking the Vermillion Walking Tour. The Falls are great and it was very interesting hiking along the river bluff. I was amazed how high the bluffs are and learned there are no fences or guard rails from keeping you from falling. Don’t walk around at night as is not always easy to see the edge with all the high grass (or just stay on the paved hiking trail). You get a great view of the cliffs and the river from the walking bridge that spans both sides of the river. Continue on the path until you get to the cool old Alexander Ramsey Mill Ruins.
Overall I enjoyed looking at the Water Falls and hiking along the river bluffs. The entire hike is only about a mile on a paved trail so it was easy. If is f you are staying or passing through Hastings I recommend you stop at Vermillion Falls Park and take a look at the falls and walk down to the old Mills ruins.

Great hike with the family- kids are 10 and 7. It had rained so was a little slippery where it was muddy. Wear good shoes! Take the dirt path down to the river to get a view of the falls from the bottom. The overlook area is easy to get to from the park.

Moved to Hastings two years ago and only noticed the falls within the last few months. Thought I would take my dog for a walk along the river and was unaware of the falls and if you walk further along the deep gorge it cuts below. Pretty impressive. Just a short 10 minute walk to the bridge and I assume you can continue on.

After a busy week, we enjoyed a couple hours leisurely walking through part of the park and seeing and hearing the falls. We were amazed to see cats across the falls and on some very steep ledges. We walked the wooden footbridge and saw people fishing below. We also took the car to the opposite side where the ruins are as well to see part of what we missed. Too bad, vandals end up putting graffiti in some of the areas that spoil the view and photo opportunities; however, the park was patrolled a couple of times too while we were there. Mountain bikes can follow the trail but you could miss the intricacies you see while walking. Would be beautiful to see in every season!

These are beautiful any season of the year with many trails short or long for biking or walking. Picnic shelter on grounds. Tucked right off HWY 61- not crowded, but sandwiched between two industries. Bonus: stop at the Hastings Dairy Store a block away for a chocolate shake to eat on your stroll

It was quite hard to find. All the residents knew just where it was and said "You couldn't miss it." After an hour of searching we found it. It was next to the mill. A break-taking 10 feet tall, it stretched over fifteen feet from bank to bank. The search for it was more memorable than the falls.

The falls could not be more accessible. Too bad there is a multi story commercial building looming over the main sector the falls.

We followed the trail to the top of the falls but would love to go back- what trail do you take to get "under" the falls? And, how do you get to he old mill ruins?
Written 20 August 2017
I'm not certain you can "get under the falls" anymore. My brother works at the mill and he said some of the trails have been closed due to safety. We stayed at the hotel across the street so we walker under the bridge to get to the park instead of driving to it and we walked a different trail every day. None of them are that long and they will all lead back to the parking lot. Just make sure you go after a good rain so you can see the falls in it's full glory - beautiful. Not much left to the old mill but you can still see remains of it.

Best place to eat if we plan to see the falls next weekend?
Written 13 April 2017
If you don't have a car available Applebee's is across the street and you can walk under the bridge. We stayed at the hotel next to Applebee's and walked to the falls.

Curious about the huge industrial building next to the falls; (in Hastings) what it is being used for. This question was erroneously attached to my review of the Plummer House near Rochester. Sorry if that was my error. Mardyk2015

It used to be owned by ConAgra. I don't know if it still is but up until recently it was owned by them. I know it is still in use.
