We drove from Richfield to Afton State Park today. It is about a 40 minute drive, and when we got there, it was closed for youth hunting! Luckily we saw a sign for this county park. We are so glad we stopped! It had sweeping views of St. Croix. The hiking was pretty rigorous as well, with lots of hills. The trails weren't super well marked and there were multiple parking lots. They had a great beach and boat landing that I bet would be great in the summer. The cross country ski trails also looked great!

We have been coming to this park for many years. It's great place for young families to spend a weekend camping. There are many playgrounds around the park. The campgrounds can accommodate any type of campers including Class A's, fifth wheels, pop ups, or tents. It's best to call and make reservations because the campgrounds can fill up fast. The restrooms and showers are clean. This park has a beach and a nice boat launch/dock. One important tip, Leave your firewood at home. You can purchase firewood at the check in station or from the camp hosts.

We took our teardrop trailer here and enjoyed the manicured/well maintained campsite (cleanest pit toilets I've ever seen, and there was a lovely modern bath/shower facility as well). There are plenty of electric campsites, which eliminated the bane of generator drone, as well as non-electric sites for tent campers. Lovely playground equipment and a volleyball court was a hit with the young people. Great hiking trails along the bluffs down to the St. Croix River.

The property was once a private park for the employees and retirees from the Ceridian/Control Data Corporation. Now in the hands of Washington County, it is a lovely respite from the stress of big city life.

The boat launch is good for small boats (under 25 ft) anything bigger and I think you'll have a some trouble loading back up. The reason I say this is because there is a big drop-off which makes it hard to load your boat while exiting. Unloading is no problem because your trailer will just disappear and your boat will float.
