The two of us set off to hike the loop trail. We saw a big black wolf in the parking lot on the road. Another car saw it too. I know everyone says it's good luck. So we went on the trail anyway. We hiked an hour or so and heard low growling along the lake. I was convinced it... More

This was probably one of the top 5 hardest hikes I've done, I wonder if folks enjoy it so much that they forget the effort? We hiked to Dry Falls, then looped back around the 2 Dry Lakes. We were there for "peak" colors last weekend, but I have to say it was disappointing. It's a nice hike, but the... More

The Bass Lake trail system is a must see if you are staying in the Ely area and enjoy hiking. There are different options to choose from depending on how ambitious you are. A must see is are the dry lake falls where there is small water fall and good swimming. Make sure you wear a sturdy pair of boots.

This place extremely beautiful. The hike at times can be a little intense but it is well worth it. Sent the night in the backwoods, it was so peaceful and relaxing. We got to listen to the Timberwolves at night and see some unique birds during the day!!

It's a lot of work. I know portaging - been canoeing in Quetico and the Boundary Waters since '64 - and this is one rugged portage. The full loop is 6 miles of up and down, a lot of rocks, and definitely a workout. We did the loop counterclockwise, starting on the south side of Bass Lake. There is one... More

We were trying to fit in a hike before the threat of rain, so we chose Bass Lake, because you have lots of different trail options depending on the time and effort you have to invest. We did not have enough time to do the 5 mile trail, so we did Dry Falls. The trail was very pretty and not... More

Did the 5+ mile loop of bass lake going counter clockwise. The first part of the trail is somewhat steep and rocky with a number of exposed tree roots. Doable in tennis shoes but nothing less. The falls were very nice a provide a pleasant place for lunch. I would recommend a shorter hike to the falls going clockwise to... More

Great hike! Views of the waterfall were indescribable. We did Dry Lake loop, a solid 3 miles and after the falls, terrain was rocky so may be more difficult for some folks and kids. But next time I want to do the full hike around Bass. If you enjoy hiking, I recommend this trail. Bring plenty of water and buff... More

I took this hike on a day it was too windy to be out on the water. The trail is well used but is nice none the less! With views of the lake here and there make for a very scenic hike. Be careful trying to following the trail map, There are a lot of unmarked "short cut" trails that... More

This is a trail that is a great way to experience the North Woods. Take the North side and you get to experience openness, a waterfall and a nice experience walking through the woods. The south side is a bit claustrophobic, closed in, an almost seems as if it was included to extend the trail. My advice is that unless... More
