The views of the lake are great. The area is really wild. We saw a wolf at one stop. The geology is even more spectacular! The area had something like 10 million years of volcanic activity. You can see many different lava flows at Gooseberry...More

The views are breathtaking. Many places to pull off the road and really take it all in. See the big ships, sailboats, sea kayaks, on a windy day - even surfers at Brighten Beach. All along the way there are great restaurants, places to stay...More

Hard to describe the feeling of standing on the shore with 10 foot waves rolling in. The. Noise The. Power The almost magical feeling of such a spiritual moment. If you haven't been up to the BIG lake in a while it's worth the drive...More

This drive is the prettiest in the 5 state area. Reminds one of upstate New England, a drive along a famous seashore, and a truly spectacular to see scenery, stop, and enjoy the magic of waterfalls, state parks, wildlife, and nature for centuries to admire!

I am a beachcomber and was very excited to get to Brighton Beach and Two Harbours. Relaxing drive with gorgeous views of lake and forest just a short drive from Duluth. Lots of picnic spots and restaurants to encourage a longer stay. We'll be back

We stayed at the Larsmont Cottages and decided to head out for a long run on the North Shore Scenic Drive. I would recommend mid-morning. It wasn't too busy yet, but enough people passing along that it felt safe and there were other runners and...More

Great relaxing drive along Lake Superior. Many scenic spots to stop and have a picnic or just take pictures. Nice public parks and beaches along the drive. Grills available to cook out. Always enjoy walking along the shore picking and skipping rocks!

Easy to take it slow and enjoy the views and waysides. Wished I could have made it all the way to Canada but ran out of time. Guess I'll have to come back to complete the journey.

Please i would love some opinions . We are going to Duluth for 6 days over the 4 th of July however we only have one day for the scenic drive . I for sure want to go to grand Marais. So I'm thinking of going from Duluth to grand Marais early early (what time does the town open ? Businesses etc...) start there then come back towards Duluth stopping at all the spots we've chose . Wouldn't it be a good way to end up late where our room is and the other way around we're late driving back from grand Marais. ??? Please I appreciate any input !! I've read every review . We are going on a Sunday July 2 nd . So I know it's gonna be busy .

I think your plan is very good to get a head start early. We did not go as far as Grand Marais.

Crazy question, I am a bit whimpy driving on mountains and roads on the side of a cliff. This drive sounds so spectacular. Do I need to prepare my mind for this type of drive??

There are places where the road is next to the lake, but not very high up. The last cliff type areas were replaced with short tunnels many years ago. Minnesota is very good about using guard rails where needed, not at all... More

Hi :) We are a group of 7-9 people planning to take the North shore scenic drive. We plan to start at 7 am on the coming Saturday and start back from Grand Marais by Sunday evening 4 pm to Minneapolis. This is mostly our first trip along the Scenic drive and therefore have included a good number of places in the itenary. We plan to reach Duluth by 10 am and cover the following places: Duluth - Brighton Beach - Old Highway 61 - Two Harbors - Castle Danger - Goosebery Falls State park - Split Rock Lighthouse State Park - Beaver Bay - Silver Bay - Tettegouche State Park - Illigen Falls - Bell harbor - Little Marias - Caribou Falls State wayside - Sugarloaf cove - Schroeder - Temperance River State Park - Tofte - Lutsen mountains - Grand Marais - Gunflint trail (very beautiful trail) - back to Duluth. I request your suggestions for the following: 1) Are the number of places included in my plan possible to visit during the 2-day trip? 2) Places recommended/not recommended for visit. 3) We plan to halt on the Saturday night by around 6:30 - 7 pm. What might be a good point to stop and rest for the night. Please suggest any decent and reasonable places to stay. 4) We want to visit Lutsen mountains on Sunday morning and go for the Gondola ride. Is Schroeder a good place to halt for the previous night? Please provide your feedback and suggestions on my North shore trip plan. Thanks :)

My advice is perhaps to streamline your itinerary as you have a very ambitious agenda for two short days. What is the point of racing to see everything at the risk of overlooking the natural beauty this scenic drive has to... More
