Twice as long as the Panama canal. Started in 1962 and finished in 1992. Cutting through Bavaria with beautiful vistas, castles and towns. Dropping 574 feet from the Danube as we progressed from Budapest to Amsterdam the locks and experience was great. Highly recommended.

River cruising from Budapest to Amsterdam was only possible with the construction of the Main-Danube canal. Over 171km, 16 locks take you up and over the continental divide (406m above MSL) as you travel between the Danube and Main rivers. Traversing a major lock is...More

One of the highlights of our Vantage river cruise was going through the many locks on the Rhine, Main and Danube Rivers. We traveled through 66 locks between Cologne and Budapest. The height ranged from a mere 9.02 foot Wuerzburg Lock to the astounding Leerstetten,...More

The river cruise is worth every cent and ideal for seeing and experiencing the locks and canals. I cannot see any other way of doing it to be honest
