The road is just beautiful, offering very nice vistas on deserts, vulcanoes, green mountains, rocks, villages by the sea. Is it worth travelling to from afar? No, but if you go here to dive, hike, walk, surf, or relax, be sure to take a half day (or full day) to do this road. Not much traffic, and rather cheap. We rented an open taxi (you sit in the back of a pickup truck, on benches. In the wind, but not in the sun (it has a roof)), for 50 euro.

The alaguers are driving along the scenic coastal road as it is easier and less dangerous than the interior road. It is still an interesting ride not to be missed....

Arriving by ferry from Mindelo at Porto Novo's harbour building we saw that the escalators were out of order, but immediately some porters arrived, to whom we said that we wanted a taxi to Ponta do Sol. They grabbed our suitcases and carried them up the regular stairs towards an aluguer, where there were people sitting inside already. The driver said: 4000 Esc to Ponta do Sol.
I explained that we didn't want an aluguer, but a taxi, of which there were plenty around. And the price was the same: 4000 Esc. We were lucky to get a nice driver, who drove the 1 1/2h to Ponta do Sol very carefully. There are many bends and many spots for picture taking en route. One also goes through two short tunnels. At the beginning, until Janela, the road is tarred, then it continues as a bumpy, cobble-stoned Calçada past Paul and Ribeira Grande until Ponta do Sol.
Since there are no taxis in Ponta do Sol, only aluguers, we asked the driver to pick us up again for the way back to Porto Novo. Then as a change one can take the equally beautiful mountain road from Ribeira Grande past Cora and a crest of 1300m all the way to Porto Novo. This road, being all cobblestone, is more strenuous and it also takes a bit longer until Porto Novo.

The road is at times on top of the ocean and has very scenic views. It runs along the East coast of the island passing by the biggest villages and showing you a glimpse into the mountains, where vegetation grows more green and you can find some water.

This road is a mixture of stone and tarmac. The tarmac section is better than most British roads! The road follows the coastline most of the way to Ribiera Grande, and has some great scenery. There are also places to stop and look at the view, or even access the beach in places. It is a delight to drive on especially when compared with some of the other roads on the island.

Taking this road was one of the highlights of my trip to Cape Verde. It follows the coast; the first part is crossing a desert with many volcanic formations. This part was built recently and it has a smooth surface. After Pontinha da Janela the road is narrow and paved with cobblestones, but this is the more interesting stretch, with steep cliffs and beautiful views of the Atlantic. Vila das Pombas is the starting point for a tour of Vale do Paul, which is in my opinion the top sight in Cape Verde. Ribeira Grande, the island's capital has a spectacular location and offers some interesting colonial buildings.

I would like to do a couple of short hiking tours (2-4hrs approx.) and was wondering if I would need my walking boots or whether a good pair of walking sandals would be OK?
