I initially thought "trees turned to rock" cant be interesting.....well once you walk around and see how the trees have fallen in a similar direction...the mind start to further appreaciate how this is formed. I would have liked to stay to see some penguins arrive...so my bit of advice if you want to see this...you may need to read up... More

The Catlins should really be on everyone's South Island itinerary, but then it might start feeling overly touristy like Hobbits or the Moeraki Boulders.. The fossilized forest was really interesting to explore. The place is wet, so recommend boots or water-proof shoe covering. The kids enjoyed jumping around the puddles and looking at interesting rocks. But the highlight was the... More

Beautiful area for solemn contemplation, nature photography or just some fresh air. Spent some time here while driving the scenic southern route and would highly recommend a visit!

Great place to visit and lots to see. Chilly on the day we went but lots of fun. The steps down to the rocks are a great improvement to what used to be there. Information boards were very helpful.

This was a fantastic place to visit even when the weather was windy and cold. We saw seals near the lighthouse and the petrified forest was really good to explore. Just make sure to wrap up in warm, weatherproof clothing to enjoy the fresh Southland air.
