Good ideas often start over beer. Always looking to take a good thing too far, we sat down over a beer (or two) and decided that beer itself was a good idea. Of course, not just some easy-drinking, institutional prole beer, but stuff like the beers we'd had at great bars. In short, we wanted beer with flavor. Complexity. Character. Intensity. Not words found in the mass-market lexicon.

So with a banjo burner, a bunch of industrial-sized kitchen pots and as many buckets as we could find, we jumped in feet first. Once a week, every week. This led to brewing twice a week and handing out bottle after bottle to everyone we knew. Now, several years later and with a 15 bbl version of our banjo burner and kitchen pots for a brewhouse, we're befuddling the beer judges and converting the masses. One pint at a time.

Located in the small lakeside town of Sawyer, MI, Greenbush crafts beers with names like Anger, Closure, Mammoth and Doomslayer-and with nothing under 6% ABV, the monikers are indicative of the styles. The brewery serves beer and a full menu out of its Sawyer taproom seven days a week and currently distributes to bars, restaurants and retailers throughout the state of Michigan, in metro Chicago and Northern Indiana.

Stop at Greenbush if you can as you travel along 94 along SW Lake Michigan towns. We made a luncheon stop here and enjoyed some good eats and brews. Friendly service awaits you in this active brewery where you can look up and see brewers at work. I could almost knock off a star due to loud music, but apparently... More

Just a half mile off of route 94 Greenbush is a great place to stop for a beer if you are traveling north into Michigan. They have an annex that serves as an outdoor patio that is a great place to chill with one of their very good beers.I had a pint of the Traktor, a golden cream ale and... More

i don't really like craft beer but don't be turned away. There food is better than full fledged restaurants. For one they are good the employees. As far as i can tell its the customers that are the hard part of the job. Hint Hint. The place is beautiful and has a local down home feel. They support local artists... More

The Cubano was the best I've tasted......they smoke their own meat here an it REALLY makes a difference! I don't drink beer but the rootbeer that they served was amazing! Definitely worth the trip!

Easy access off I-94 for everyone traveling from Chicago to Detroit or vice versa. The selection is excellent, and the brewery is extremely eye appealing with all the glass mugs from members on display. Family friendly in the daylight hours. Food is AMAZING! For those just looking for growler fills, or merchandise, just stop across the street to their annex... More

Last year (2013) I went to the Greenbush on a few occasions whilst visiting friends in the same area, and much to my delight it was a great place with a difference. The beers are made on the premises which you can see being done through the window into the brewing area, and there is a good choice to sample,... More

I grew up in the area but live in another state. I make it a point to go to Greenbush every time I come home. It is always busy so plan accordingly. The beer is delicious and fresh. We had a sampler BBQ platter last month that was very tasty. We also always get the pretzels and cheese spread. It... More

We stay in Sawyer every year for the month of September with family and ever since Greenbush opened several years ago we became fans. It started as just a brewery with a few snacks and now has an annex building across the street and an expanded menu with outstanding soups, salads and sandwiches. Love the ambiance (growlers, metal work, natural... More
