The church is right next door to the Tower of History, and worth a quick look in while you're there. It's a pretty little church, and a nice place to get some peace and quiet for a moment. Nothing here will make you linger.

Splendid Gothic church built in 1881, including lovely stained glass of that era. Displays memorabilia of Venerable Frederic Baraga, the first bishop of the Lake Superior basin, originally seated on this church site. At one point this church was set to be torn down and replaced with a “brutalist” concrete one. Only its bell tower got built, today rebranded as the “Tower of History” next door to the Gothic church, which was left standing.

Our cruise ship docked in Sault Ste. Marie and I went for a stroll in town. The beautiful Holy Name of Mary Church brought me across the street for a closer view. I read the sign and then later learned (from Wikipedia) that a pro-cathedral is a parish church that is temporarily serving as the cathedral or co-cathedral of a diocese.

Beautiful interior and the old building has been kept very well. They have one of the larges congregations, Father has quite an accent that makes mass feel special.

We were sight seeing in the Soo and stopped by the church after 5:00 on a weekday. The parish priest was working in the gardens so we thought we'd take a chance and stop to see if the church was open. It was.

This is the Third oldest Catholic Parish in the US and the inside of the church is quite beautiful. To my mind these old Catholic churches have so much more character than the newer churches. To top it off the Priest stopped by and asked where we were from and answered a few questions. What a nice man and he was so thoughtful to leave the church open until 6:00.

This is one beautiful old church. The interior is beautiful and well cared for as as the exterior. Awhile visiting parishioners were working the exterior plants and flowers about the premises. The stained glass windows are beautiful as is the altar and interior art pieces. The Church also has a nice feeling to it for prayer. We are definitely visiting this church again next time in the area.

Had no idea there was such a thing as a Pro-Cathedral but this Beautiful Church which dates from 1881 was once the Bishops seat but got demoted when he moved on ! His loss as the Church is still a lovely building & well worth a look at if in the area !
