And a magnificent medieval castle on the hill with breathtaking views. We spent two nights in the castle which was all at our disposal. And magnificent drinking sparkling wine, stargazing in the courtyard of a magnificent castle. The highlight of our experience was the concert of two outstanding choirs.
In the castle you can also enjoy visiting the permanent exhibition of France Slana. Ours was enriched by piano accompaniment.
They also made us breakfast. Surprise: served in the basket. All prepared by an ecological farm with medieval mill. In conclusion, an experience to remember.

The castle itself is magnificent-up on a hill with beautifull surroudings. There is a parking space right in front of the entrance and the caste itself has a lot to see inside (thow there aren't many old things preserved). We took the 'Tresure hunt' experience with two preschool children and it was great! We highly recomend the visit and the tresure hunt for all families!

Our room was big, very clean and elegant. The views from our room windows were spectacular.
There are several baths to hike and enjoy castle surroundings. A tour in the castle includes overnight stay.
Breakfast was packed in a basked, it was tasty and big enough. Personnel was very helpful and polite.

The drive to the castle is through the unspoilt, wild landscape. Extremely friendly reception - the lady at the reception welcomed us really friendly. The children went on a treasure hunt, the adults went around the castle with an audio quide and then had a drink - nice staff too. The castle has been beautifully restored, you can feel the majesty of the centuries. Exceptional views. I definitely want to come back!

We booked a room with breakfast. We got ticket to see the castle with audioguide, welcome local apple juice, herbal tea, apples and pamflets of everything about Kozjanski park. Room fridge had local products. Picnic blanket in the wardrobe if you want to eat breakfast outside. It was a great stay. Friendly staff, room clean, scenery spectacular. I loved that no bar was in the castle so we had peace - bars are in town.

Hidden gem in incredibly charming area of Slovenia we wish we had had more time to explore (and less rain). This is not Trokoscan Castle for those looking for similar experiences. But it has some very interesting and unexpected galleries, an art gallery with an amazing view, an extensive exhibit on Fungi, and a once in a lifetime experience: A small but amazing prize-winning photography exhibit in the attic of a castle which is actually a bat cave with hundreds of live bats over your head, that's right, you heard me correctly! It was unforgettable and by far the most unique experience of our trip. That alone is worth it!

We visited the castle whilst staying in the Kozjanska region. It has a wonderful location in the Kozjanske hills, surrounded by forest but with great views over the Bistrica valley. The cost to enter the castle - including the audio guide - is 4 euros (a pittance compared to castle visits in our Scottish homeland!). It is a striking example of Romanesque architecture and has been well restored in recent years. There are two very striking and compelling exhibits - glassware and information about the pilgrimage trails. The castle is one of the central points for the pilgrimage trail of St Emma of Gurk.

Podsreda is real medieval castle, rebuilt and preserved and open for tourists. It is seat of the regional park and still not enough known in Slovenia and abroad. For the small entrance fee you can look at old kitchen at several exhibitions, from glass to some paintings (not connected with the castle). They organize concerts during the summer season but it is hard to find way to this small spot from Maribor or Ljubljana. Nice view and some other attractions around. It is advisable to make o bike tour from some bigger tourist centers near the castle as Olimje. No restaurant, poor souvenir shop.

Well maitained catsle, Easy to find which is not a case for the castle in Podcentrek. Inside you may understand how people lived and also see an excellent exhibition of Slovenia modern art (and glass history in the region).

I came here by bike. Though hilly, what a superb ride to this Romanesque gem. Windy road with large old trees forming arches above, providing shade and a bit of mystery. The surrounding forest looks darkish and ancient.
You can do an audio tour at your pace. They are available in Slovenian, English, German, Italian, and Russian. The place is very well maintained. You first cross a gigantic wooden door to enter the castle, immediately after, you pass by some old horse-drawn buggies (not sure if it is the correct name) stored in the hallway leading to the courtyard. Welcome back in time.
Built in the 12th century (first mentioned in 1213), it was nearly destroyed during WWII despite its massive bulk, it was under renovation from 1983 to 2015.
Considered one of the best-preserved Romanesque fortress in Slovenia. You are surrounded by three-meter thick walls leading you to a medieval kitchen with an open fireplace, a bright central courtyard with a sgraffito of a knight and angels and a dungeon hidden beneath a staircase. Everything here speaks of strength, power, hard work, and longevity.
It also features beamed ceilings, chandeliers, a glasswork exhibit of surprising quality (Captured Transparency), and a fabulous wood-paneled Renaissance Hall where concerts and weddings took place. Also present are color lithographs of Štajerska (NE Slovenia) castles from 1830 to 1860, the long and complicated history/genealogy of various families related to this area, geological and biological educative displays (local plants, fungi, birds, animals, fossils, rocks) a permanent painting exhibition of Slovenian artist France Slana, and a very tiny Romanesque chapel. There are several stairs, some quite narrow so it’s not accessible to everyone.
There is a small souvenir and coffee shop at the entrance and picnic tables to sit at. Enjoy a nice snack or drink pre or post visit.
Should pilgrimages be of interest to you, the castle is also a focal point for the pilgrimage trail of St Emma of Gurk.
You can rent rooms but I didn’t so I cannot comment on that part of the castle.
Very serene place to visit and/or relax at. I truly enjoyed going back in time quietly and peacefully.
