About
The birthplace of winegrowing in Burgundy, the Chateau du Clos de Vougeot began in the 12th century as a winery built by monks from the Abbey of Citeaux. In 1551, a residential building in the renaissance style was added by Dom Jean Loisier, justifying the name of “ chateau ”. A Historic Monument, the Chateau du Clos de Vougeot is home to the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin and seat of the “ Climats ” of Burgundy (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). As a backdrop to receptions, weddings and cocktail parties, the Cistercian and renaissance walls of the Chateau make it one of France’s most outstanding table d’hotes, as well as an exceptional venue for prestigious cultural events. OPENING HOURS Open to the public seven days a week April to October : 9.00a.m.- 6.30p.m. (Saturday : 9.00a.m.- 5.00p.m.) November to March : 10.00a.m.- 5.00p.m. Closed on December 24th, 25th, 31st and January 1st.

    Chateau impressive, reception rude
The castle is interesting. However only 3/5 because 1st the reception was unhelpful and worse 1 woman (guide) was hostile rude and impatient. I am a 70 year old Canadian, not usually thought to be stupid, and pretty good in French but she had me in tears. What we eventually learned was to follow the arrows - the first is not easy to find, and that the numbers on the self-guiding brochure do not indicate the order of the tour. Ask about the time of the film if you want to see it. The film is about the order of winetasters, not much about the Chateau. It’s in the middle of the tour, but you may want to time your arrival there, esp if you want to watch in English (every 40 min. Finally there is an written/audio-guide which the app and tour are independently provided on your celphone and best downloaded ahead of time. The app is Balades en Bourgogne, then download the “guided tour of the Chateau du Clos de Vougeot.” There is quite a display of Gustav Eiffel in the dormitory. So many of the displays are unrelated to the chateau. The wine presses are impressive, but no info about them without the audioguide, or a guided tour.

    A magical place
A magical place and a stunning château that is steeped in history. Beautifully preserved and maintained. We visited on one of the evenings of the Festival Musique & Vin au Clos Vougeot, and equally enjoyed the dégustation of amazing wines from the Burgundy region in the grange and the concert in the castle’s main hall afterwards. The château is also worth a regular visit.

A pilgrimage of sorts for all wine lovers
I was so happy to finally have a chance to visit le Clos de Vougeot. So historical. I wish we had been able to take a guided tour but our timing was off. The young ladies at the front desk could not have been nicer or friendlier. And I told them how nice is was to be greeted with a warm smile. I might have liked a bit more to see but all in all it was a wonderful visit. The view over the vinyeards in wildly impressive.

    Long…
….breath of history. Magnificent experience. Missed the guided tour, however we got a flyer with all the information we needed. The we could take all the time we needed to get back time. Only thing missing was some more actual wine. Still amazing

A must see for all wine lovers, this place is packed with history going back centuries. The headquarters of the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin carry on a rich tradition of love of wine and charitable activities. The surrounding vineyards are massive. Don't miss it!

the setting of the machinery and the techniques for producing wine is charming and aesthetically powerful: the perfectly conserved machines and tools and the setting of the place, so well preserved, are interesting also for people not expert in wine.
the building is beautiful and the scenery of the vineyards very charming.
If you are a wine enthusiast, the wine tasting (to be booked) adds depth to the experience.
After the visit, I advise to go to Nuits-Saint-Georges, a small village close by (8 minutes driving), well conserved, cured, not extremely touristic, perfect for dinner.

This is a small place. We were able to visit it, but had no food, degustatoin or visit to the winery itself. We were not able to buy their wine either. Quite disappointing.

Some great history and info here for those that love wine and how it is done. The chateau does not make wine anymore but rather hosts lavish parties for 250 euros per person I was told with 8 diff wines during the course of the meal. Another cheaper option is to make a reservation and have lunch here with 6 diff wines and then a guided tour in French after. We opted for the self guided tour as it was later in the day and thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommended place to visit!

Our group consisted of wine masters and beginners, and the tour was absolutely amazing. The tour guide Joachim made the experience interesting, humorous and we will remember his explanation.
