We'd been to Le Mont St-Michel and were looking forward to seeing a good selection of its 250 manuscripts. We didn't. You work your way through 2 floors of Mont St-Michel and Avranches history, the processes involved in creating manuscripts and so on, before coming to a single tiny dimly-let room with about a dozen manuscripts, none of which are... This is worth a visit if you are in area but not worth a special trip. I find the city itself and its location as interesting as the Scriptorial. I guess my expectations were too high. I have read books that describe the creation and nature of "illuminated" manuscripts and was expecting to see more manuscripts with elaborate initial capitals,... More

This is a purpose built museum which houses medieval manuscripts from Mont St. Michel and other places. There are regular exhibitions of art work and a permanent display of manuscripts with a useful explanation of the work of medieval clerks. worth a visit on a rainy day.

This is a very interesting and interactive museum, unfortunately at the present time let down by non-working films and broken interactive experiences. On my previous visit, 3 years ago all was excellent, I am sure it will return to it's former glory. The superb way it explains and shows the building and uses made of Mont Saint-Michel and the books... More

Quite an interesting museum housing the archives collection from Mont St. Michel. Lots of ancient tomes here and some are on display. Very modern with computers throughout & interesting explanations of the artifacts. Gives a nice added dimension of understanding the Mont St. Michel....

We saw the Scriptorial advertised at Mont Saint-Michel the previous day and decided to check it out. All the exhibits are very well done and chock full of information. If you want to learn more about the history of and life at Mont Saint-Michel with emphasis on the creation of the manuscripts this is the place to go. We thought... More

A lovely museum with an incredible amount of information packed into every space. We enjoyed learning about manuscript production and preservation across time. The room with the actual manuscripts was amazing.

As others have commented, you do need a good grasp of written French to appreciate all that is on offer here. We found the videos fascinating, especially the one that showed how ancient tomes were repaired and restored by craftsmen. The manuscript room was also interesting, although to be honest I had expected to be able to look at a... More
