A true intense volcano hike experience.
We took a tour that the hike started at Cristo Rey, which is very convenient for families, since it’s an only 45 min hike to the crater.
It a steep trail, but totally doable for teens and healthy adults.
At the top you stand literally at the edge of the volcano crater… a mind blowing experience.

The only downside of this tour was the road to get to Cristo Rey. It’s a very bumpy road that forces the car to drive really slow… that resulted in a one hour drive one-way.

A group of 25+ of us have just thoroughly enjoyed 3 days of trekking up and down these volcanoes near Leon, thanks to our wonderful guides, Henry Rueda, Sterling and the Doc Pedro. Spectacular scenery. Can't recommend these guys more highly What thoughtful and charming guides.

Beautiful little volcano. And you can sometimes see the lava.
There are two trails up. A long one. And an hour one. Both amazing.

I hiked the volcano solo taking a local bus from Leon terminal heading to San Jacinto. Hop off the bus here and head to the Hervideros de San Jacinto and pay a C70 entry fee for foreign tourists. I used the Maps.Me app which has a trail on it, its pretty easy to follow from here. it took me about 2:45 hiking up, I spent about an hour and a half exploring around the creator and having some lunch and headed back down towards Santa Teresa, it took about 2 hours coming down. The trail this way leads right to a bus stop. I only had to wait 5 minutes to flag down a chicken bus heading back into Leon. Total cost 12c each way for the bus and 70c entry. I heard you have to pay a 100c fee at the top but I was the only person there when I went and didn't see anybody else. Highly recommend this hike, take lots of water!

I was looking for hot lave. Got up 4 o'clock in the morning to drive to the base of the volcano and hike up to the crater. Views were fantastic, the crater was spectacular with a lot of sulfur fog, But there is no lava visible any more since 2016. if you want to see that, go to volcano Masaya. There you can drive uo to the crater and see the lava flowing.

Cool activity, by yourself or by tour both are great.
There are guides to do it alone if you want to go without a tour guide, just make sure to be actually prepared with supplies :)

We did the full-day tour, including bat cave. The hike up is not difficult but is hot; 4 litres of water is not too much. Our guide, Marden with Volcano Day, spotted many, many birds and other creatures as well as introduced us to some local plants. It's very cool to stand at the lip of the crater as it hisses and fumes but we never saw lava... apparently, it's not that often that lava is seen.
The bat cave was kind of interesting and the perfect sunset is always elusive. Spending time in the breeze among fuming volcanoes as the sun set was terrific.
A flashlight or headlamp will be necessary for the (much shorter) walk down to a somewhat longer truck ride back to León.

We went with Tierra tours who picked us up at our hotel in a 4 x 4 and drove to the base of the volcano. the last 40 minutes of the drive were on a very interesting "road". OK. Its not a road. it is a rubble and rock strewn path! Nice and bumpy and an experience in its own right! It is about 40 minutes to an hour to walk up (unless you are superman) and its probably about medium difficulty if you aren't fit. (Yeah. I'm not.....) If you don't have a guide then some of the rocks are marked with white paint. TAKE A DECENT TORCH!! You can go right to the edge of the crater but its pretty full of dense smoke so you wont see lava unless you are lucky and have a smokefree day or lairy lava day. At night you can see lava sparks as the lava extrudes and turns over. You can certainly hear it. If you have never done anything like this its a must do. Its more of a challenge than Massaya which you just drive up to so more of a sense of achievement and success.

I went twice. Amazing tour and hike. It is not as challenging and great scenery from different angles. The crater is just from another world you can go around check the bat cave and come back to enjoy a magnificent sunset.
Make sure to bring some water and snacks. All around it took us around 6 hours to do it.
