Hokano Adventures is a grassroots tour operator specializing in authentic off-the-beaten track adventures throughout Nicaragua. All our adventures are led by local bilingual guides. All our tours are designed to give you an exceptional inside experience of the people, culture, traditions and landscapes of this country. Many of our tours take you right into the homes of local artists where you can watch or learn hands on traditional art forms or cuisine. We also offer customized tour packages, allowing you to design your own adventure or itinerary. All of our adventures focus of giving you the most amazing experience of Nicaragua while at the same helping support the local community. For every tour you take a percent of all our profits go directly towards the non-profit community projects that we support as part of Foundación Hokano. We work with local poor people to empower them to get involved in tourism for better life conditions and teaching them to protect the environment around them. Tours range from volcano hikes, islands, lakes and beaches, visits to local artists and artisans in which you are invited to learn hands on traditional art forms such as primitivism painting, guitar making, sawdust carpets and ceramic sculpting. An important initiative we have is voluntourism: We believe it is an important part of making tourism more sustainable, that it provides travellers and communities a way to connect, to learn, to appreciate each other's cultures, and work towards a better future. Our Voluntours provide opportunities for travellers to engage in community projects that are working on health, education, conservation and small business opportunities around.

Two female solo travelers. Wanted a short (3 HR) tour of the city. The negotiated price was for 3 HR, but after only two sites (cathedral and museo de legends) and 1.5 HR, the guide told us we were finished. Also, we had asked that he interpret for us at the museo de revolution, only to not have that be... More

My city tour with Ingrid focused on the revolution of 1979 which gave me a good perspective on 20th century Nicaraguan history as well as the character of Leon as the intellectual brain of the country. She also gave some attention to colonial history vis a vis the architecture of the city as well as the churches. Excellent, inciteful and... More

We did a 2 day trip from Leon to the Canyon near Somoto where we rapelled and swam/jumped through the Canyon. After that we went to Miraflor wich is a forest and landscape you have never seen before. Like a fairytale. The trip was very well organised and cheaper compared to other companies. Carlos is a very good guide with... More

My volcano boarding trip was arranged through the hostel where I was staying and I'm so happy with the experience. I was picked up and dropped off at the front of the hostel. My guide was Gretchen, and she was fantastic. I was a little afraid about this trip, not because of the volcano boarding itself but because I was... More

The people working here are very nice. My girlfriend and I did a volcano boarding tour through them. We weren't all that satisfied with it. My board appeared to be sort of broken, and my protective suit was far too small for me, which seemingly would have been obvious from the outset. The tour guide Henry was a very nice... More

Because of spending a longer time than expected at Rio San Juan, we only had a bit over 2 full days in Leon (sadly!). But we still had many things we wanted to do. We arrived to Leon late on a Friday night and the owner, Carlos, met us at our hostel (Posada La Gordita..he is friends of the hostel... More

Outside Leon, tour of ancient Spanish ruins: relaxing drive in beautiful countryside, informative, of historical importance. Generous, well done tour. Volcano tour & lagoon swim: very enjoyable, great photo opportunities, turkey vultures perched overhead delighted to see us swimming in their lagoon. Requires hiking across rough farmland, climbing up & down crater & is suitable for the hearty. A unique... More

We had Mario and despite our best efforts, it was not a good time with him. He was aloof and unconcerned. He didn't introduce himself or give us detailed instructions. Our group had a bit of hesitation at the top of the volcano and we asked him for advice and reassurance. He made jokes about us dying and simply instructed... More

We did a volcano-boarding tour at the Cerro Negro and we really enjoyed it! They were on time to pick us up from our hostal and we were with a small group. The driver and tour guide were very friendly, also it was cheaper than the other tourcompanies. They even bought some fresh fruit for us and on the way... More
