We visited Merv as part of a tour in April 2015 which I forgot to review, but little will have changed, although excavation are carried out annually. Complete walled circuits of ancient towns, especially ones built of mudbrick are not common, yet amazingly, there ar 3 Mervs, all with complete circuits. Although very little survives of the ancient city's buildings,... More

Ancient ruined city situated on the silk road dating from the 4th century, sacked by Genghis Khan in the 13th century and then abandoned. The ancient city is surrounded by a mud wall which surrounds a huge area. A lot of the city is lost and you will definitely need a car, and an English speaking guide (or other as... More

Merv was in ancient times an important way station on the Great Silk Road between the 2nd and the 13th centuries, when it was sacked by the Mongols. These ancient ruins fascinating and well worth a visit. The views from one of the peaks is spectacular. You can almost feel the history. Merv is located about 22 miles from the... More

Merv is a long and bumpy ride from Mary but definitely worth it. I am a history buff and had read an amazing book about Central Asia and its contribution to medieval knowledge. Merv played a central role and at one time (12c) had over a million inhabitants. The Mongols brought it to ruin and the town was built using... More

This place is as old as dirt but still inspires by thinking about what went on here so long ago. Some restoration has happened and it appears to be well looked after. There is a small fee for camera use.

Ok it is a bit disappointing seen that little is left and that UNESCO takes a very long time to reconstruct the site. But the surrounding desert landscape is absolutely beautiful. Do not miss to climb the hill to get a great view of the full site. Even by 48 degrees (as I experienced it in July) with a hot... More

We drove for a long time and arrived at this ancient site. We were shown various antiquities, but after being in Uzbekistan and visiting beautiful reconstructed sites, these were very disappointing. The palace was a series of eroding pillars and if you do not have a good imagination, and a good guide, you would never know what was there. We... More

It was a wet muddy morning when we arrived. The ruins are too far gone for anything to see besides a few rocks. You need a serious sense of imagination to even try to picture what life could have been like.
