I was able to observe the rich culture of Sri Lankans and their medical remedies. I was able to see "Medical Boat /Canoe", medicine grinding spots, where our traditional doctors treated our community with their won knowledge

Free entry. Not a sole in sight. A group of monkeys live here and they were fascinating to watch. They playfully bounded about the ruins but didn't come too close for comfort. We saw a lizard on the wall too. An excellent place to see animals.
The ruins are really interesting although there is no information on site, so do your research into the history of the temple before you visit.
Its well worth a trip.
On Trip Advisor, the temple is showing on our map as in Trinco, but it's around 10km ish drive away - worth noting when planning a visit.

This place has a lot of history. Over 2000 years old with statues that are still standing. The old ruins are still partially in the jungle, not yet uncovered, not yet visible. The part that is visible is already large. The new temple has a great story about it on the civil war & terrorist tamil tigers. Do pay a quick visit to the small (tiny)museum.

Velgam Vehera is an ancient Buddhist temple built by King Devanamiyatissa. The temple is situated away from civilization in a forest. The area is very silent and forestry in the area gives a mystical and calm feeling for those who are near by. The temple was attacked by LTTE terrorists but managed to survive. A mortar got stuck in the Bo tree which was intended to destroy the tree. Locals believe it was a miracle.

This place has a beautiful setting of huge old trees and lawns, and the main feature is the remains of a centuries-old Buddhist temple. It was delightful to walk on the ancient stones, and to touch the original standing Buddha image, which was carved out of crystalline rock. There are other ruins all over the site, and also a modern Buddhist monastery, with a new-looking building where the monks live, and a new Image House containing a huge Buddha statue and other figures. I enjoyed spending a quiet time in the image house, which would be a perfect place to pray or meditate. Next to the image house there's a snow-white dagoba (stupa), and both are right next to miles of green padi fields. This is truly a lovely place to visit.

This spot is worth a visit to imagine the dedication of the local buddhists, and splendour of the past. The ruins of this temple seems to be decaying due to neglect.

this is a very old Buddhist temple that was also made into a Hindu temple when Indian invaders took control of that area many centuries ago. The guard stones seen there are unique with almost a flower vase type engravings-not seen this anywhere else in Srilanka
