Very friendly tour guide on site. A few boat models, shells and artefacts on display. Do not expect too much. Nice building, renovated in 2009. Wasn't aware that the French occupied part of Sri Lanka's North East, but for only about 10 years in the late 18th Century. Interesting to learn. Since there are not too many spots to visit in Trincomalee, worth a brief visit.

This is a must visit place in trincomale. A very well arranged place. By visiting this place you can get an idea on how important trincomale has been as a strategic place in srilankan history. Highly recommend this place for school children.

I enjoyed touring this museum. It was my first time in Trincomalee, and the tour guide provided us with a lot of information about how this site is so unique historically.

Beware. There are two Navy Museums. This one we didn’t get to and Hoods Tower Naval museum located inside the Naval base which we went to. For Sri Lankans access seemed easy. For foreign passport holders you need prior permission to enter.
We were accompanied by a naval officer at all times.
Hoods tower overlooks both harbours and has a fascinating array of naval artefacts. We didn’t go slowly but it took 3 hours.
Afterwards there is an optional boat trip around the harbour.
Prices are expensive for foreigners and were in dollars but they only accepted rupees. Everyone was friendly and a great day out.
No cafe.

Interesting enough seeing the naval history of Trinco, but what is really impressive is the pictures of the old building in such a state of disrepair and see the difference now after the massive restoration work was completed.

For the average Trinco tourist, this museum is likely not that interesting. But for someone particularly interested in Sri Lankan military history (like myself), this museum offered insight that you can’t find online or in many books. Artifacts have been sent from across Sri Lanka have been sent here for preservation and display.
Entry to the museum is free. I took my time at each exhibit and was able to finish it in 1 hour. The curator is a nice Sinhala exhibitor who speaks English proficiently, and was kind enough to walk me through the place and provide explanations. Trincomalee has a rich naval and maritime history that I encourage all visitors to explore.

Really loved my visit to this amazing building with interesting contents. The museum itself is great and showcases much of Sri Lanka’s maritime history. Of equal interest to us was the building itself which has been restored with the assistance of the Dutch government. A grand building taking you back in time to perhaps a grander era of this country.
Please take some time to explore and entry is free.

On the face of it, there doesn't appear to be much inside the museum. However, definitely take the excellent guided tour from one of the in-house archaeologists who will talk you through the history of Sri Lanka and how it relates to the sea. To see the amazing restoration project on the building itself is also something. Strongly recommended.

Hello. I am going to Sri Lanka in December and spending a couple of days in Trinco. I lived there as a child when my father worked in the dockyard. I would like to try and find my old home but realise that it may have been bulldozed. Do you know if there are any living quarters in the dockyard as the address I have does say that is where we were although this seems odd to me.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
