This is a must visit place in trincomale. A very well arranged place. By visiting this place you can get an idea on how important trincomale has been as a strategic place in srilankan history. Highly recommend this place for school children.

I enjoyed touring this museum. It was my first time in Trincomalee, and the tour guide provided us with a lot of information about how this site is so unique historically.

The museum has free entrance. The building has two floors and small exhibitions of the navy and marine life. A nice place for a quick visit.

This small museum in a recently restored colonial villa contains several sections of informative topics on Trincomalee harbour and history, on marine biology and ecology

This is also the place to see in Trincomalee, alongwith other much-publicised whale-watching etc.etc. We chanced upon this while just driving around the city, near the fort area, and the sight of a museum is always alluring especially in a foreign land! This place has a free entry.
The building had it's own beautiful character and the rusted and jaded Dutch canons in the front lawn and a chameleon sun-bathing on it was a sight!! The building, with it's Dutch history dating back to the 16th century was restored few years back after the war had settled in the city. It's extremely heartwarming to know that the all precious artifacts were stored and preserved safely elsewhere and then restored in the building.
We had an extremely able guide in Mr Chamara, from the museum itself, who took us through all the nooks and crannies of the building and it's rich history. There was a pillar, on the top floor, still kept in it's original pre-restoration condition for a before-after comparison. It was soul-stirring.
The interiors, divided into different rooms, had merchant navy ship models of different countries who traded with Sri Lanka at the time alongwith a room of Navy artifacts/ uniforms etc. Very interesting memorabilia, indeed!
The highlight of the visit was the maritime room which had 8 species of sea life made of fibre-optic cable and hung from the ceiling in a glass cage! It was just so captivating and the azure shades were alluring, to say the least!! Also the colourful corals exhibited in a glass case was a sight to behold!!
This museum needs some repairs before the condition aggravates any further but is still a must-visit and it should be on the "to-do" list for the hotel owners in Trincomalee too!!

We didn’t research much before going there, leading to us coming the day it was closed do to cleaning. But that didn’t matter, one of the guides showed us the whole museum. We got a private guided tour for free :-)
Very exciting and interesting tour, where we learned much about the Sri Lankan history; military and civil.
Would go there again!

Hello. I am going to Sri Lanka in December and spending a couple of days in Trinco. I lived there as a child when my father worked in the dockyard. I would like to try and find my old home but realise that it may have been bulldozed. Do you know if there are any living quarters in the dockyard as the address I have does say that is where we were although this seems odd to me.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
