Beautiful square. Good to take time slowly going around and exploring every element of this magical area. Nyatapola the five storied temple rightfully steals most of the attention. We had lunch in a restaurant overlooking the square.

I enjoyed walking around the square. I was here early in the day, so there were less people walking around or just sitting. Great place to take pictures, but most of all, just to experience such a site is memorable.

...due to its bustling nature and thriving stalls, as well as the incredible buildings all around. It’s impressive now, before the earthquake it would have been utterly spectacular!

On a cold January evening we enjoyed sitting on New Cafe Nyatapola’s balcony drinking tea and looking down on the square during the evening market and prayer/worship hours around 6-7pm. Listening to the drumming and bell ringing in the dark was magical. One temple is restored the other is still being rebuilt.

Wish we could have seen this pagoda temple before the earthquake. I am sure the 5 story temple was impressive. King Malla had it built in 1702 and dedicated to Siddhi Lakshmi. The Nyatapola Temple is the tallest in Nepal.
There was a smaller 3 story temple also associated with King Malla.

This is the main square upon entry to Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Entrance fee for foreigners is NPR 1,500 per person. The main attractions are the Golden Gate and Nyatapola Temple. Incredible woodcrafts and architecture. It is listed under the UNESCO World Heritage site at the Kathmandu Valley where the site is under the threat of earthquake especially in 2015. A precious heritage that worth a visit!

Most pictures you see of this Square are pre earthquake, and don’t get me wrong, it’s still impressive BUT the access is so limited you can’t even get a proper picture showing how incredible it must have been a few years back!

This is the place that I like most. In the middle of these heritage buildings, you will find a market busy with people. The colorful vegetables and fruits stalls contrast to the old buildings, makes the place really picturesque.

There was a market at the time when we visited so the place was full of people and vendors. It was lovely seeing those colorful fruits and other merchandise and people too. So glad we came across this place.
