Very small collection of brass, bronze and stone sculptures, paintings including Tantric thankas, manuscripts, stone inscriptions and an old set of Nauva Durga masks, with a few exceptional pieces not to be missed. The Malla-period Surya and Candra carvings from 1469AD are exquisite.
The museum is housed in a wing of the former palace, was damaged in the 2015 earthquake, and is scheduled for renovation. Good views of Darbar Square from the second floor windows, and there's a small inner courtyard. Two giant stone lions guard the entrance, flanking large statues of Bhairab and of Narasingha executing Hiranyakashyap that are still worshipped every morning, and two smaller statues on the pillars at the door preserving a traditional palace entrance.

It's just in the middle of square and beside royal palace. There are too many ancient paintings there and also you can find some original Kama Sutra Paintings!
It's not too big and be worth to visit. I really enjoy visiting these miniatures and original paintings of this culture.
It has just a little entrance fee. I think 100 NRs.

Same ticket for two museums, not expensive, a real cultural deal. Statues, books and paintings of old kings. Quick visit (the places are quite small) but interesting and different. Gentle people working there.

Theres a mostly very good collection of miniatures, not well lit, but light comes in the long windows. An old painted floor, almost no-one around; despite neglect etc it had a charming nostalgic feel.

I am not too sure what I had expected but I suppose the very minimum I wanted to see was one or two really ancient relics with an explanation of their significance in a range of languages including English. But instead I saw poor collection of mediocre examples of fairly recent 'art' and with no explanations of their relevance. As to the staff 'guarding' they were polite but non spoke any other language but their own and I was left disappointed with the lack of interaction. I think small changes in the exhibition would make a huge difference. After all the purpose of any museum of this sort, at its core, is to show (where possible) and to explain the past. Sadly this failed on both accounts.

We are in Nepal now and because of a general strike we decided to walk around our hotel neighborhood. The art museum is in a square in the center part of the old city. There is a fee of 15$ for non-Nepali, Western foreigners and the ticket will also let you into two other museums, so keep it handy. It will also cost you 15$ a head to get into the city and keep that ticket as it is good for 7days.
I am going to be blunt here, buy a ticket. If you are visiting, you can greatly contribute to the rebuilding of this area by infusing tourist dollars. That being said, I am not convinced the art museum building will survive many more shakes. I am not sure I would go in again. One section is already closed and deemed unsafe (you can see into the room though). There are big cracks in the walls. The courtyard appears to have UN or Red Cross tents in it. It is a small museum with tantric art, some sculptures and photos/portraits of past leaders. Tantric art is exactly what you think so be wary of you have kids (though they'd have to do some non-kid like scrutinizing of the art to get it).

With daily power outages, seeing the museum can be a challenge for ideal conditions, but they do have generators and the staff were very accommodating, especially since we were so amazed by their collection, great!

A beautiful museum with as much history as beauty. I was led on a tour by Gyan Mukhiya who pointed out the pieces and gave additional information as to some of the meaning behind the art. Would recommend.
