The island is thankfully a protected area. At least most of it. There are still several villages where fishing and farming is done but good portion of local population is involved in tourism business. Though, again thankfully, the tourist facilities are limited. Main problem here...More

Iriomote Island is beautiful! It is relaxed, low key, non commercial and has the nicest people. I worked there 40 years ago as a cook in a Minshuku during college when much of the road was dirt. Now, there is still only 1 main road...More

Iriomote Island is truly awesome, we are there when the weather is good. we see a lot of things: manta rays, corals, coral bones beaches, clean water. It is away from Ishigak, petite and beautiful enough for a lot of activities to enjoy.

This island is amazing. There are only 2,400 inhabitants, 2 traffic lights and 2 cabs on the island. Perfect place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life. We stayed at the Nirakanai resort and the place was amazing with its...More

Incredible nature-both land and seawise, great food, nice climate, great people. Go snorkeling, take a jungle walk, get on a river boat cruise, or just hang out on one of the beautiful beaches. And don‘t forget to try local food!
