The original Dahongpao bushes that I had been reading about were a bit anticlimactic, but the walk was pleasant, and not too taxing. Not impressed at how strict the end of the included bus schedule was though. You really have to give yourself time to get to the final bus, which is hard to judge since it is your first time there. We had to get a long public bus back to town.

The Da Hong Pao Scenic Park is an interesting place if you want to know anything and everything about tea. They feature statues depicting the harvesting and the process of making tea. The area also showed some Chinese people who contributed great importance for the tea culture in China.

Aside from the scenic area, one can watch the Da Hong Pao show, a very interesting show especially for play-lovers. Ticket costs RMB218, but it is actually too cheap for the quality entertainment that you will enjoy.

The play showed the origin of tea and how it affects one's health and daily life. The show is very entertaining. It also feature a 360 degree seating, wherein the audience gets to see the entire show while rotating around the theater. It lasts for a little over an hour and is directed by Zhang Yi Mo, the director during the Beijing Olympics.

Da Hong Pao (大红袍), literally "Big Red Robe", refers to the original plants found only in Wu Yi Shan which gave birth to the infamous tea leaves also named Da Hong Pao. Though farmers no longer pick tea leaves from these six trees, the opportunity still exists to check them out in all their former glory.

Sadly, the trees themselves grow on a mountain wall, meaning there isn't much to do once you reach the area other than take photos and admire trees you can't even touch. If you're unsure as to which tree you should be capturing on camera, don't hesitate to ask the (relatively) friendly fellows running the nearby teahouse.

My humble opinion is that the scenery in the vicinity proved to be far more photo-worthy. Does the idea of a magnificent valley filled with tea plantations appeal to you? As is usually the case with Mother Nature's works, this place is best enjoyed on a cool morning. It's recommended for tourists who don't like hiking yet wish to enjoy mountain scenery.

On how to get to the mountain from town, that depends on whether or not you bought a ticket for a shuttle bus; otherwise, you can rely on the locals, or simply opt to put your own two feet to good use, though the walk may take more than an hour (you have been warned).

If you're up for it, all it takes is an hour of walking from where the Da Hong Pao can be found and ten minutes of hiking to arrive at Shui Lian Dong (水帘洞), literally "Water Curtain Cave", which happens to be the largest of Wu Yi Shan's renowned Seventy-Two Caves (七十二洞). Here, a steady stream of water plunges down a grandiose cliff. It's a must-see, not only for the pretty sights, but also for its historical significance.

Along the journey from Da Hong Pao to Shui Lian Dong, do look out also for similarly photo-worthy sights, such as Liu Xiang Jian (流香涧), literally "Aroma Stream", and Ying Zui Yan (鹰嘴岩), literally "Eagle Mouth Rock".

Many tour groups do the bus hop from Big Red Robe (not Rope!) and the Water Curtain Hole, but to make your trip worthwhile, you should hike the journey of 2.9km between those sites. The journey is uphill and downhill, but the scenic views along the way are well worth it. You will pass by valleys and tea trees, with great layered rocks along the hill side. It’s best to bring hiking poles for the journey to save your knees. It took me about 4 hours to do the journey at my own pace.

This is good introductory hike or a good ending one (as it was for us) since it is relatively short and easy (compared to the other trails we did). There are 2 ways to the get to the 6 "mother" trees and I recommend you do both to get the full experience.

At the destination, the 6 trees are very clearly marked out and you can then see the source of pride and revenue for the region. A must do, though please do not expect imposing trees....it is more of a symbolic visit than one for scenic reasons.

Having drank tea brewed with Da Hing Pao tea leaves for some years, we thought we need to visit this scenic spot when we visited Wuyishan for the first time.

We paid for a two day's entrance and shuttle bus tickets (adults at 235 yuan and half price for senior citizens : 2015 price). Hopped on the shuttle bus (from the south entrance) and it will take you to most scenic spots in Wuyishan including Da Hong Pao.

It took about 20 minutes walk before you reach the spot where the original six trees had been growing that resulted in the generations of lovely black tea.

There's a tea house there on site where you can buy eggs soaked up by the tea. We cannot confirm if the leaves were of this prestigious plant or not.

Other that taking a photo with the inscription on the mountain side, there's not much to see.

One tip for visitors to Wuyishan, all sites there were one way in, same way out for your shuttle bus. Make sure you have enough energy for the return "walk".

Unlike other tea farms that tourists have to go through the dreaded sales pitch to purchase tea products, this tea terrace is actually one nice scenic destination at Wuyishan. After the shuttle ride inside the park, we walked along the tranquil and peaceful path with tea plants all around to the valley until we saw the Da Hong Pao trees half way up the hill. Quite interesting and relaxing.

This is something you don't frequently find in China - a place where you can take a walk on a well maintained, scenic mountain trail without competing with thousands of other visitors! The trail leads through many small tea plantations, along peaceful streams and past some very impressive mountain scenery. Lots of places for photos, and a few places where you almost feel alone. Very peaceful.

The scenery is amazing and there is lots to learn about the local tea industry if you go with a guide. A guide would also be able to help you avoid the crowds. I recommend Jenny at Wuyishan China International Travel Service.
