COVID has the office/visitor center closed - at least it looked like it could have been something like that. The trails don't really go anywhere. We took a steep climb down to the lakeshore (had a nice sit in the rocks at the shore) but it didn't seem like it was supposed to be part of the trail as there was some barbed wire in the ground to step over to begin the climb down.

This is an Audubon Bird Sanctuary on the grounds of the former M.E. and Gertrude Gray home, just north of Orchard Beach State Park. Three short easy, but unpaved, walking trails within the 75 acres, passing by various unusual tree specimens including California Redwood, Ginkgo, and two Michigan Champion Trees, a Giant Sequoia and a Sycamore Maple.

Lovely views of Lake Michigan, with picnic areas.

This place has a rich history and beautiful grounds. The lovely Lakeshore landscape with it's woodsy trails make this a great place for bird watchers, hikers, meditating in nature, taking in a beautiful Sunset. Photographers will love it at Lake Bluff Bird Sanctuary.

The trails are well maintained, beautiful, and interesting. The view of Lake Michigan is stunning. The stretch of beach you can walk on is lovely and we had it all to ourselves. It is a rock collector's paradise. While we didn't see any new or migrating birds on our visit, it was well worth it. I am sure there are days when a birder can glass many interesting species.

We love this place in August and September when the monarchs come. There are so many butterflies at this time of year in an area on the property where specific plants that attract butterflies have been planted. The property is on a high bluff overlooking Lake Michigan with spectacular views and incredible trees. A great place to take pictures and a path on the north end of the property that leads down to Lake Michigan where you can do some rock hunting. We have even found Petoskey stones in the water along this beach.

Quiet little nook for bird watching or just walking - we did spy a Bald Eagle and saw a Merlin with his dinner - beautiful field of native plants that attract songbirds and butterflies and bees.

The weather was cool and misty so we walked straight to the lake to make the visit short. To our surprise, we heard the cry of an eagle and saw a bald eagle clearly perched on a dead branch above the beachside deck! We heard but didn’t see other birds. So the quick visit paid off with a bald eagle sighting!

The Bird Sanctuary is a wonderful spot for an outdoor stroll or for some serious bird watching. Great variety of plants complement the views high above Lake Michigan. Great samples of California redwood are found on the grounds. The location is excellent for year-round exploration. Can be explored from short to longer visit.

Stopped by chance and was pleasantly surprised. However I saw very few birds. Maps there help in identifying various plants and trees. Trail does make it to the very rocky beach, which is very small like all beaches during this summer of 2017. Drop a donation to help out this hidden treasure.

I visited on Sunday and Sanctuary was closed but we saw the Sequioa trees there! They were planted in 1948, so they are babies, but I never knew we had them in Michigan. This area of Manistee is absolutely beautiful!
