I rarely give a bad review and love all the state parks except this one. If you have children stay away. We had our 12 young grand kids with 12 adults camp here on these tiny spots only 5-10 feet from the only main road into the campground. One 10 wide road handles all the big rigs and shares with all the kids on bikes and walkers with pets. We witnessed 80% driving way over the 5 mph rule which is marked by one tiny sign. Numerous accidents nearly happened with idiots who totally disregarded the law and children near them.you walk out of your tent in the tiny tiny spaces right up to a narrow road with huge rigs passing only a few feet from you. Several fights nearly happened but worse was potential for a bad pedestrian accident. Clearly speed bumps and much better signage and speed enforcement could avoid the issue. When staff was told they blew it off as nothing they can do. You can’t change the awful design or the Walmart parking lot set up for campers but please do something about child and human safety. Will never go back but I am more concerned about child safety.

We recently returned from a 7-night stay at Orchard Beach and very much enjoyed our stay there. In retrospect, we would have only planned about 3 nights there and then moved on to another area/park. The park is very small and has limited options for entertainment. Certainly, the beach is great and the views are spectacular! But if you have elderly or wee ones (as we did), it is not possible to take them swimming as many days are too windy and the walk down to the beach is dangerous. There are no bike paths within the park and the playgrounds are outdated and inaccessible to younger children. Depending on where you are in the park, the bathroom can be quite a hike. Also, during salmon fishing season you'll find that many of the sites have 1 - 2 cars, a camper and a boat on them, which made the campground look more like a parking lot than a state park! On the positive, the constant breeze from the lake made the August heat pleasant and the location in Manistee means that you are in a central location to visit both the Ludington area and the Sleeping Bear Dunes. One tip - the beach in Manistee is FAR superior to the beach at the park. It is only a few minutes drive from the park. It is a huge expanse of white sandy beach, a beach house with bathrooms and a concession stand, a playground, and much cleaner. Our family really enjoyed swimming there.

Orchard Beach State Park sure is an upbeat place! The sunsets are amazing and the views of Lake Michigan are breath-taking. The nature walk was excellent- Paths & trees are labeled very well. Nice activities for the kids with the camp hostess. The campground and the bathhouses were clean. I found some good things to say!

Okay, I am from PA. In PA & MD the campsites have pavement or gravel to park on. There is also a minimum of vehicles per site. Park rangers also patrol in PA & MD. Maybe I expected too much, maybe I am picky... oh, and I used the online website for Michigan State Parks.

When I read about my site online, I expect it to be just that, level and the dimensions to be pretty close. I looked at the pictures of it and it looked great. We stayed on site 99. It was an update site- new sewage hook-up, which was a plus. THE DIMENSIONS CHANGED DUE TO THE UPDATING!!! IT WAS NOT MENTIONED ON THE RESERVATION WEBSITE!!! The campsite went from a width of 50 feet to about 30 feet! Our camper awning almost covered the fire ring. The site was out of level on one side of our travel trailer by 6-10 inches. We had to use firewood to level our camper because we ran out out of lego-like blocking! I needed to use my step stool as a third step to get in my rig! We had a major rainstorm and the water ponded on the site beside us...the water ran down through our site. LEVEL?! I am no engineer, but when water travels from one side to another there is a leveling problem. More gravel sites needed- they added a few, but not enough.

(The workers/rangers did not come immediately to help out the flooded neighbor.)

The review of the campfire smoke... accurate.

The review of barking dogs... accurate as well.

The review about quiet... not so close. It was a party campground. People pull and park their campers anywhere they want in the site. They park anywhere they want in the site! We saw campers, larger boats, storage trailers and tents all through the sites. It was like watching the pioneers make the wagon circles- the get togethers would go from one road of the campground to the other! My family witnessed this firsthand. If people couldn't back their campers into a spot, they pulled through other sites to achieve the perfect place. The sites are "cramped gravel patches"! They are a mess! Now, I know families get together for picnics and reunions, but I now know they do get-togthers for camping. I actually counted 18 camping chairs around one campfire ring!!! Believe me, the quiet hour did not start at 11PM. It was a free-for-all the entire week we were there. It was one partying crowd after another- there was no peace and quiet! The alcohol was aplenty- lots of opened, visible containers. The rangers were present, but not heard.

The camp speed limit is 5 MPH- not obeyed at all. Little kids are everywhere and yet people drive on it like a regular roadway!

Sure, the campground was renovated- updated dumpstations, full hook-ups. But the shower houses are not new. I spoke to a staff member and they will remain the same because of the campground being on the National Historic Registry. This is what was told to me. The showers ran out of hot water. The one shower house gives a person a feeling of claustrophobia.

Fire rings- no grates for grilling. Our fire ring was so deep we couldn't even see the fire or feel the heat, thus it was a "smoker". These fire rings do not permit oxygen; and oxygen is needed to get a fire going. ! Maybe they could use the sand from the beach and fill them part way to remedy the problem.

Oh yeah, the beach. Nice little beach. What you see on the brochure is all the beach there is at this park!!! A reviewer mentioned walking the beach 20 minutes north. She was correct, you can, but there is no beach to walk on, it is more like a sand walkway/path. It is not like being at the Atlantic Ocean, where one has so much room to stay out of the surf. You have to walk in Lake Michigan to go around fallen trees, rocks or landforms. (Lots of steps down to the beach- keep that in mind.)

There is very limited beach access. You need to do some driving to find places. (The water was only 64 degrees when we were there- not sure if that is typical.) If you plan on fishing, take your boat or charter one. Again, you have to go looking for good places to fish. Unfortunately, OBSP does not lend itself to fishing; it is too shallow. But then anyone can get lucky. If you are looking for agates, go to the Upper Peninsula. Petosky stones can be found, but very sporadic at OBSP.

Quite frankly, I am surprised that the State of Michigan doesn't take better care of this state park. It is on the National Registry. The cliffs are a hazard that should be monitored better- I saw lots of people getting right at the edge of them. (They have fencing, but that does not stop unmonitored kids or adults that do not know any better.) These cliffs will keep falling away because people are walking on them! The campsites will be mud-messes soon if the rangers don't gain control of the parking/vehicle situation. The beaches of Michigan are eroding, but it seems that nothing is being done to help preserve them. Orchard Beach State Park just may end up in the lake if better care isn't taken immediately.

We just returned from a 6 night stay at this park and we had a great time. I would definitely recommend this campground to others however I would make note that there are some definite challenges with this park. On the positive side there are spectacular views of Lake Michigan (we had lots 121 & 123), lots of mature trees, as well as a very friendly and helpful staff. They also have a nice little and very new looking little cabin for rent for those who wish to forgo the tent/camper route. The potential challenges for some campers may be (1) you have to walk down a narrow flight of ~80 stairs to reach the beach, (2) the beach is sandy but the waters edge is very rocky and I would recommend water socks/sandals, (3) the sites with a view of the lake are also get a lot of wind off the bluff & lake, (4) the bath house located along the bluff is at the top of a decent sized hill with no paved pathway and only contains toilets, (5) the bath house located near the fill station is not handicap accessible and the showers are very narrow with only 2 having decent water pressure, (6) a good majority of sites are severely unlevel and dirt, (7) the bath houses are original to the park but unfortunately that also means that there are fairly out of date in comparison to many other Michigan State Parks, and (8) there are no toddler swings for smaller kids. Again we really enjoyed our stay and thought that the park was gorgeous but we wanted to convey some of the challenges that we encountered.

Many many years ago, so Orchard Beach IS my earliest memory. I've been returning for over 60 years to car camp at the old place. Beach is fantastic but I'm now getting a bit too old to go down & up the stairs. It is quite a climb. The view from the top of the bluff is fantastic. There is an access point to a Lake Michigan beach at road level just 3/4 mile north of the park's entrance and also a few miles south of the park, in downtown Manistee at the 5th Ave Beach - in my opinion, one of the best beaches in the world and with great facilities. Some campsites are uneven & will sound too close to the road for some. M110, the highway running by the park is scarcely traveled after dark so there won't be much traffic noise. If you are coming down US 31 from the north, there is a shortcut to Orchard Beach off the US highway, otherwise you will have to back track north up M110 where it connects to US 31 at the Burger King on the north end of Manistee. Restrooms can be far from some of the campsites, so I bring my bike with me to make it easier. Electric outlets for campsites can be as far as 50 feet from where camps are made, be sure to bring a long enough cord. This is one of the few campgrounds in Michigan that have dedicated dish water drain sinks - which stand alone, near some of the cold water taps, not in the buildings. As mentioned in other reviews, showers are kind of old fashioned & could be better. I have learned to 'time' my showers to avoid shortages of hot water during times of heavy use. This and other Michigan state parks have finally learned to leave fans running inside the toilet facilities to prevent build-up of condensation in times of very humid weather and they also have hot air hand driers and hand soap dispensers, something not provided in earlier years and very useful for camping.
The Burger King at the intersection of M110 and US31 sells 7 lb. bags of ice for $1.00 plus tax, cheaper than the park, they also have WiFi. I like to eat at the House of Flavors in downtown Manistee. They have all kinds and sizes of home made ice cream, and my favorite dinner is available all day long: whole roast turkey with the trimmings, something rarely available anywhere else. This is not turkey loaf, but the whole bird. I had roast turkey for breakfast there a few weeks ago, great stuff! Oleson's market in downtown Manistee sells frozen buffalo steaks and meat from their own herd (hence the store's buffalo logo). Buffalo T-bone steaks are very lean yet very tender & easy to cook at a campsite.

Spent five nights at Orchard Beach last week, just me and the dog in our 25-foot trailer.
This is a very nice park, 78 steps above Lake Michigan. Lots of mature trees provide shade. We faced south but never put out the awning.
Showers and flush toilets, cleaned religiously each day. Outhouses at the far south end.
Be aware, fill your tanks on the top drive when you arrive; there's no water ( or sewer) on the sites. You can buy ice at the check-in station, and town is just two miles away.
No glass containers or animals allowed on the beach, but there's a public access beach less than a mile north, where Sierra got plenty of time fetching tennis balls in the surf.
The sunsets from above the beach were excellent! You can walk for miles in both directions on the clean sandy beach.
Nearby Manistee has lots of history and a nice Main Street along the river.
Great canoe and kayak options on nearby rivers, to say nothing of the fishing for salmon, perch and others varieties on the rivers or the Lake.
We're planning to go back next year with several of the grand kids.
You can reserve a site no more than six months in advance.

This is a real nice quiet park to camp in. From any spot in the campground you can easily walk over to views of Lake Michigan. If you wish, you can take stairs right down to the lake or...just enjoy the view from groung level. The park is just minutes from downtown Manistee and there are several things to do nearby. Mini golf, a casino, and the airport are just a few minutes away heading north. We saw a sign on the airport fence for plane rides. We took a 20 minute flight out over Lake Michigan for a cost of $25.00 per adult ($20.00 for children) which was fantastic!!! Seeping Bear Dunes ( less than a 1.5 hour drive) offers fantastic overlooks of Lake Michigan. One overlook (the Lake Michigan overlook) offers views from 450 feet above the lake! Wow!!!
There was one thing that surprised us about the Manistee area. We could only find 1 location that carried t-shirts for Manistee? We could not find or purchase any for Orchard Beach State Park? Nice area...and its also close to Ludington State Park (30 minutes) and also close to Silver Lake State Park (60 minutes) So, take advantage of your vehicle park sticker and visit those areas too. Both of those parks have a Lighthouse! Enjoy!!!

We recently camped for 4 days at Orchard Beach State Park, located in Manistee, Michigan. This was our second visit to this park, the last being several years ago. We were so glad we returned to visit this small gem of a state park. Located on a wonderful bluff, with great views of Lake Michigan. One must walk up to the top of the bluff to see the views, except from a few sites and these sites, I am sure, are reserved very early in the season. Large, shady trees thru out the park, with dirt/grass/gravel sites. Firepit, picnic tables, some sites with benches. Though there is little privacy between sites (or none at all), they do not seem overly crowded. Bathrooms clean. Nice picnic area with a small playground. Long, steep staircase down to the beach, though it is a very nice beach at that. If this is not possible for you, drive left out of campground for about 3/4 to 1 mile and you will find an excellent, small, very sandy beach with a nice, gentle slope down to the water. Limited parking. No bathrooms or picnic tables, 2 benches. Thepark staff were very attentive, informative, and always available. Security walking around the park at night. Firewood, ice available in park. Great sunset viewing! Highly recommned this park to all campers.

We stayed at Orchard Beach recently. The park is on the small side - maybe 100 acres or so. It has about 140 camp sites and some camping cabins. Most sites are dirt - not much grass there. The bath houses there are a little dated - limited number of showers & toilets. We stayed in site #65 which is a little bigger than most. It is adjacent to the camping cabin & it backs up to Lakeshore Rd. Michigan requires a 2 night stay here in the summer.

The highlight of this place is the beach. In my humble opinion, it is the best beach I've ever been to. A person accesses the beach via an 80 step stairway from the bluff of the park. When you get to beach level, you are on a stip of sand that is fairly narrow - only about 150 feet wide. But you're looking directly west into Lake Michigan and that beach extends at least 1/2 mile each way to the north & to the south. My wife & I walked north from the stairway for 20 minutes and never came to another beach access. The land there was all sandy bluff that looked to be at least 100 feet high.

The beach sand there is soooo soft. It is almost as fine as powder. I know it sounds like I'm way on this description, but It's true. It is almost as if a strong enough wind came, it would kick up a cloud. I've been to the Gulf beaches of Florida and this sand is way nicer. Plus the water is crystal clear! Visiting here was a real treat.
